2018 U.S. OPEN DAY 1: Defending Champion Sloane Stephens Glides Through Round 1 To Defend Her Title

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

On Monday afternoon, Sloane Stephens began her US Open defense with an almost-routine win over Evgeniya Rodina, 6-1, 7-5, in their first career meeting.

The American couldn’t have wished for a better start as she closed out the first set in less than 30 minutes. The world No. 80 didn’t truly settle in until she was down 4-2 in the second set, which helped Stephens shake off some early nerves.

"I was a little bit nervous. I think obviously it's never easy as an American playing in the US Open," Stephens said. "I think I've felt worse nerves than that, playing here before in previous years."

Things are very different for Stephens this time around in New York. The 25-year-old returns as a US Open and Miami Open champion, a world No. 3 and a Nike star, decked out in a bright orange dress.

Another change for Stephens was playing in the new Louis Armstrong Stadium, complete with a retractable roof. It's quite breezy inside thanks to its open-air setup, designed so that when the roof is closed, there’s still a natural atmosphere on court. The new breezeway allows fans to walk and talk during play, and since the slot of open air is barely above eye level, it adds a new challenge for players trying to tune out the noise and movement.

"It was just loud," Stephens said. "There was a lot going on between the airplanes and the subway behind the court, the concessions being in the lower bowl, and people walking in the games at, like, 2-all, 3-all. Yes, it was fun to play first day on a brand-new stadium court. But there was a lot happening. Full article here.

2018 U.S. OPEN: Venus Williams Defeats Fellow U.S. Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova In Opening Round

American Venus Williams and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova took to the courts for round one of the 2018 U.S. Open wherein the two went toe-to-toe with Venus eventually prevailing.

In all, it was a high-quality affair from both competitors, Venus striking 48 winners to 45 unforced errors while Kuznetsova struck 40 winners to 38 unforced errors.

"I'm most pleased I won the match. I think I stayed pretty aggressive throughout the match, and that's how I want to play the tournament" Venus stated post match.

"It's wonderful when the crowd is behind you. I experienced that much later in my career than I guess is typical. But I guess it's wonderful to have people on your side. You have to do it for yourself as well, but if the crowd is with you, it's wonderful to do it for them, too."

Up next for the seven-time Grand Slam champion is Wimbledon quarterfinalist Camila Giorgi.

U.S. OPEN: Canadian Teen Powerhouse Felix Auger-Aliassime Retires Due To Heat Exhaustion

After having a trainer visit two games into the third set of  the 2018 U.S. Open first round, eighteen-year-old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime worked the court slower and slower and eventually retired from the match against his close friend and fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

Shapovalov came over to his teary-eyed friend and provided very admirable support. Courtside microphones picked up Auger-Aliassime telling Shapovalov: “My team said it’s just not worth it.”

“What me and Felix have is truly incredible,” Shapovalov said. “It’s truly making the sport bigger in our country, and hopefully we continue to do that.”

FRENCH OPEN: Bernard Giudicelli, "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" Serena Williams - Her 23 Grand Slam Titles PROVE Her Respect for the Game!!!!!!

Friday, August 24, 2018

image
American Serena Williams at 2018 French Open in grand slam return after giving birth.

Where is Childish Gambino, I need a "This Is Tennis" track - better still, "These Are Sports"!!!

In an interview for Tennis Magazine, French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli announced that the French Open will be introducing a new, more restrictive dress code stating, ‘’I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far” and “[the catsuit] will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place.’’

Wow...   Wow...   Wow...

HOW IN THE HELL DOES SERENA WILLIAMS E-A-R-N 23 Grand Slam Titles and have no respect for the game of tennis?

And if clothing is any indication of a player's respect for the game, based upon what I've seen MANY other players clothe themselves in over the years, respect would have to be absolutely the lowest rung on the ladder of respect for tennis.

The greater majority of tennis players express their individuality, fashion persuasion, culture, personal likes/dislikes, and/or support for a great number of things/issues in the outfits that they choose to wear for tennis tournaments. Yet it wasn't until the great Serena Williams graced the courts of France in an outfit that supported her grand-slam return with a two-fold purpose, that whatever bias, discriminatory beliefs, jackassness or foolishness (there's more I'm sure) that Giudicelli has towards this Queen of the game, find what is obviously deemed a legitimate opportunity to change the rules of the game in France, while accusing Serena Williams of being the impetus for the change.

Didn't like her catsuit? Ever heard of a damn cell phone? DM? Coach? Hell, a note!!

Or, was this simply an opportunity to get some conversation going with the non-great name of Bernard Giudicelli in it? Whatever the reasoning, you can rest assured that your disrespect of Serena Williams is now on the table.

F-A-U-L-T!!

Always remember, Karma is a bonefide...!!
