Christus Pro-Celebrity Classic To Be Rescheduled

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

BEAUMONT — The CHRISTUS Pro-Celebrity Classic, presented by Texas State Bank and sponsored by Port Arthur’s Motiva refinery, will be rescheduled as a result of the impact of Hurricane Humberto.

The Ford Arena event featuring Anna Kournikova, Chanda Rubin, Dr. Phil McGraw, Stone Phillips, Pete Sampras, Todd Martin, John Lucas and KFDM-TV’s Dan Gresham is on hold until a later date.

“We extend our sympathy to the residents who suffered as a result of Hurricane Humberto and recognize it is in the best interest of the fans, sponsors and participants to allow the area to fully recover from the aftermath before bringing this first year event to Southeast Texas,” said Tim Stallard, event producer, in a released statement Monday.

“This is the first time in our company’s eleven year history of producing sports and entertainment events across the country that we have had to reschedule an event.

”Stallard added that he hopes to have a new date announced later this week.

All tickets sold for the Friday, Sept. 21 tennis event at Ford Arena will be honored for the rescheduled date. Anyone wishing to receive a ticket refund may do so by contacting the location where they purchased their tickets.

Russia Wins Fed Cup

MOSCOW -- Russia won its third Federation Cup on Sunday after world no. 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova battled back from a set down to beat Italy’s Francesca Schiavone, giving the host an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Kuznetsova, 22, won 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5 in two hours 44 minutes, clinching her seventh win in nine head-to-head meetings with Schiavone.

“I was really too nervous today, especially at the beginning,” Kuznetsova said. “But later I managed to settle down and find my rhythm. I’m so happy to win! Francesca played very well today. Probably it was her best match in recent years. But our fans’ and my teammates’ support helped me a lot to win. And I feel I was slightly better physically prepared for today’s match.”

The results: Russia 3 Italy 0 (Svetlana Kuznetsova bt Francesca Schiavone 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5; Svetlana Kuznetsova bt Mara Santangelo 6-1, 6-2; Anna Chakvetadze bt Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 4-6, 6-4).

I just got tagged by Jerry Beuterbaugh of FishHawk Droppings. And to think, I had come to think of him as such a nice guy by way of his blog, uggggghh!! And unfortunately for me, I'm one of those rule followers, but I think a community of devious bloggers is going to teach me to get over that real quick!

Jet Lag May Have Cost Blake Turbo Title

Saturday, September 15, 2007

Andy Murray pocketed £50,000 by winning the inaugural Betfair Turbo Tennis tournament at the O2 Arena.

The 20-year-old beat surprise finalist Goran Ivanisevic 7-4 to claim the winner-takes-all prize pot. He said, "It was awesome. I really enjoyed myself and the crowd were unbelievable. It was a lot of fun playing a tennis match like this."

Tim Henman was to have taken part but pulled out when his third daughter, Grace, was born the day before. Greg Rusedski stepped in to take his place and began the tournament with a low-key bout with Ivanisevic that saw the veterans creak around the court rarely able to return serve at first.

Jamie Murray, the mixed doubles hero of Wimbledon, was next up and disposed of Pat Cash - at 42 a man twice his opponent's age - 7-5 to set up a semi-final bout with his younger brother.

That family matter followed a gripping 30 minutes that saw world no. 6 James Blake, who had earlier tried to rid himself of some trans-Atlantic jet-lag with a nap, fail to get the better of Ivanisevic, who had celebrated his 36th birthday two days previously.

With no time remaining, Blake held service to bring the scores level at 8-8 but then put the sudden death match point into the net.

A Blogger's Choice Award Nomination!

My site was nominated for Best Sports Blog!Once again a fellow blogger has looked upon this blog, hence me, and deemed it worthy of praise. For that honour I am so very grateful. And I owe those thanks to Poetess, author of "A Day In The Life Of A Sista."

I personally enjoy visiting blogs of others who I consider to be like minded, those who like to look on the upside of things, even when it's hard to find. You know, "the flesh may be weak but the spirit is willing" type of blogger -- people who breathe the air of good will. Well Poetess is just such a blogger and that has always been enough for me. For her to honour me with this nomination is truly rewarding. Stop by her blog sometimes, you'll see what I mean.

Many blessings Poetess!

Gael Monfils Into The Semis At The BCR Open

Today at 12:00 p.m. (Romanian time) on the Central Court at the BCR Open in Bucharest, Romania, world no. 48 Gael Monfils of France will be playing in the semi-finals. Just last month he had to withdraw from the U. S. Open because of a right hamstring injury, and a few weeks later he's in the semi-finals of another event. Additionally, he had to qualify for this event! Work it out Monfils!

In the quaterfinals Monfils played his French compatriot Marc Gicquel whom he defeated 6-4, 6-2. Monfils served up 12 aces against Gicquel during the 74 minute match yesterday. At 21 years of age this was his 21st ATP-level victory and the third occasion he has reached the last four at a tournament this year. Monfils will try to reach his second ATP final of the year after finishing runner-up in Poertschach (l. to Monaco) in May.

At the same time, it looks like Monfils will have a tall order to fill. His semi-final opponent will be 6'6" Victor Hanescu of Bucharest, Romania. The cheering will NOT be for Monfils at this one.
