Tsonga Reaches Final Of Aegon Championships

Saturday, June 11, 2011

Jo-Wilfried dives for a ball in his semi-final match at the Queen's Club.

James Ward
Frenchman Jo Wilfried Tsonga set up a meeting with Britain's own Andy Murray in the final of the AEGON Championships on Sunday at the Queen's Club when he beat British No. 2 James Ward in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(7).

After Ward failed to convert a couple of break points of his own, Tsonga was able to serve out the set. Even when Ward had a chance to level the match after breaking for a 4-2 lead in the second set, Tsonga broke back to force a tie-break.

Both players had chances in the breaker, but it was Tsonga who came through as Ward missed a passing shot on the Frenchman's second match point.

Purple Reign... Purple Reign... Serena Back To Rule With A Splash Of Color

American Serena Williams

Serena Williams looked relaxed at Eastbourne as she prepared to play her first competitive tennis since winning the Wimbledon crown last year.

Her hair streaked with Wimbledon purple and wearing a striking pair of stripy leggings, Serena and sister Venus brought excitement to a normally sedate tournament on the south coast.

When the sisters compete in the AEGON International next week, it will also be Venus's first competitive tennis since the Australian Open in January.

The pair hit for an hour each on an outside court at Devonshire Park. Venus was up first before then taking pictures of her sister on her phone and signing autographs for the dozen or so people watching.

Serena looked in particularly good form, amazing for someone who had emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from her lung in March.

Both looked in decent physical shape as they were coached by father Richard, though Venus, with a strapped right wrist, took a tumble on the damp grass.

The venue will take some getting used to for the world stars, with the changing rooms' basic facilities in some old squash courts and rain forecast for much of next week.
Eastbourne was alerted about the sisters' participation by a confidential email which arrived in the middle of the night last Saturday.

It's A Banner Day For The French! Monfils Advances To Semi-finals In Halle

Friday, June 10, 2011

Frenchman Gael Monfils wins quarterfinal match at Gerry Weber Open

France’s Gael Monfils is feeling more and more at home in his debut at the GERRY WEBER OPEN, beating German sixth seed Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-4 to book his spot in the semi-finals. The world number eight Monfils, who in April moved into the Top 10, has yet to lose a set in Halle.

"I’m number eight in the world so this isn’t really a surprise. I’m happy with the way I am playing on the grass. And this is great preparation for Wimbledon,” said Monfils, who will play Philipp Kohlschreiber in Saturday’s semis.

Both Monfils and Mayer broke in the first set before Monfils collected his second break in the 10th game to win the set 6-4. In the second frame, Monfils broke Mayer’s serve for a 4-2 advantage but Mayer broke right back. The Frenchman however earned a match point on Mayer’s serve in the 10th game and won the match in 1 hour 4 minutes with a forehand strike down the line.

Well Work It Out Tsonga!! The Frenchman Halts Nadal's Advance in London

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga celebrates after defeating World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the Queen's Club Championships.

A weary Rafa Nadal had his Wimbledon warm-up cut short when he was beaten 6-7 6-4 6-1 in the quarter-finals of the Queen's Club championships by Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday.

The Spanish world number one, who claimed a record-equalling sixth French Open title on Sunday, looked on course for the semi-final when he took an opening set tiebreak but appeared to run out of steam as fifth seed Tsonga seized control.

A full-length diving volley helped Tsonga earn two break points at 4-4 in the second set and, when Nadal hit long, the match began to slide away in the evening sunshine.
Tsonga broke Wimbledon champion Nadal's serve at the start of the deciding set and for once there was nothing left as he slumped to defeat.

Tsonga will play British wildcard James Ward or fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino for a place in Sunday's final.

Monfils Advances In Halle - Partners With Dustin Brown For Doubles

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Frenchman Gael Monfils, Gerry Weber Open

Germany's Dustin Brown
It was already after 9 p.m. when Gael Monfils took the court for the first time in singles at the 19th Gerry Weber Open. It’s no surprise that the number 3 seed didn’t want to play a long match in his GWO debut. He made it short and sweet, beating his compatriot Florent Serra 6-4, 6-3 in just 57 minutes.

Serra had reached the main field in Halle through qualifiers but could not challenge Monfils’ impressive game, losing his service in the seventh game of the first set. The 24-year-old Monfils did what he wanted to with Serra in their second ATP meeting, breaking him in the first and final games of the second set to take the match. Monfils also beat Serra in Brisbane in 2010, and the world number 8 next faces Croatian Ivan Dodig in the second round. That match will not be played until Thursday as Monfils is playing on Wednesday doubles with Dustin Brown.

Sixth seed Florian Mayer withstood 20 aces from wildcard Dustin Brown to reach the second round of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle on Wednesday.

Brown was clinical on serve but simply could not catch his fellow German, who triumphed 7-6 (8-6) 2-6 6-3 in 79 minutes to set up a second-round clash with Lu Yen-Hsun.

LONDON, June 7 (UPI) -- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dropped just one game Tuesday in sailing through his second-round match at the Aegon Championships in London.

Tsonga, seeded fifth in the grass-court tournament, was on the court just 47 minutes before finishing off a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Michael Berrer. Tsonga won 68 percent of the points in the match, including a healthy 63 percent off Berrer's serve.

Third-seeded Andy Roddick also advanced but in a much more difficult 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 match against Feliciano Lopez. Roddick managed just two breaks in the match -- both coming in the third set.

LEGG MASON TENNIS CLASSIC: James Blake's Return To DC For The Classic Announced

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

James Blake, USA
We are pleased to announce that James Blake will return to the Legg Mason Tennis Classic presented by GEICO in 2011. Blake, the 2002 champion and 2005 runner-up, earned the first of his 10 ATP singles titles at the 2002 Legg Mason Tennis Classic, upsetting top-seeded Andre Agassi in the semifinals..  Blake reached the final again in 2005, where he fell to three-time champion Andy Roddick.

The former Harvard star was the top-ranked American in 2006, reaching a career-high of No. 4 in the world, but has been plagued by injuries in recent years.  Blake’s tennis career has seen many setbacks, including scoliosis, fractured vertebrae, and the loss of his father to cancer. Despite these challenges, Blake has excelled both on the court and off, becoming a role model for young players. His book, “Breaking Back: How I Lost Everything and Won Back My Life” documents both the challenges and successes of his career.  For his efforts in the community, his fellow players recognized him with the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award in 2008.

Blake’s addition to the 2011 Legg Mason Tennis Classic further strengthens an already competitive field.  Several of the game's marquee players (as previously announced), including world No. 10 Mardy Fish, No. 11 Andy Roddick, No. 15 Viktor Troicki of Serbia, Sam Querrey and John Isner, 2010 runner-up Marcos Baghdatis (Cyprus), former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt and Canada's rising star Milos Raonic - have committed to play in the 2011 Legg Mason Tennis Classic presented by GEICO.

THE DROUGHT IS OVA: Venus And Serena Williams Are Back In Effect!! All Happy Dances Are Allowed

Venus and Serena Williams during doubles win at Wimbledon 2009

Just when American tennis had reached its lowest point in the Open era, the Williams sisters have announced they both plan to return next week to competition after long layoffs, expecting to play the Eastbourne tuneup tournament on grass and then Wimbledon.

Serena Williams, in particular, was a question mark. She hasn't played competitively since capturing the Wimbledon title last summer and soon afterward stepping on a shard of glass at a Munich restaurant. Serena endured two rounds of surgery for cuts to her foot, then an emergency procedure in March to remove a blood clot from her lungs, a frightening condition.

Serena Williams released a statement through her agent, Jill Smoller, confirming her intention to play again beginning with the first round at Eastbourne next Tuesday. Wimbledon starts the following Monday, June 20, when Serena Williams would likely play on the first day as defending champion.

"I am so excited to be healthy enough to compete," Serena said. "These past 12 months have been extremely tough and character building. I have so much to be grateful for. I'm thankful to my family, friends and fans for their support. Serena's back!"

Venus Williams, meanwhile, has not played since retiring during a third round match at the Australian Open in January due to a hip injury.

In the absence of the Williams sisters, no American man or woman has contended for any major title, and none made it into the second week at the French Open. Mardy Fish is now the top-ranked U.S. men's player at No. 9. Serena and Venus are still ranked among the highest of American women. Serena is 25th and Venus is 32nd, while Bethanie Mattek-Sands is at No. 31.

Serena, 29, has won 13 majors, including four Wimbledons. Venus, 30, has won seven majors, including five Wimbledons. Together, they have captured nine of the past 11 Wimbledon titles.
