Abdominal Strain Forces James Blake to Withdraw from Rogers Cup
Wednesday, August 8, 2007
I was sooo looking forward to seeing James Blake wipe the court with Lleyton Hewitt's butt, but alas, his health is far more important than my desire to see Hewitt beaten again.
With the US Open less than three weeks away, Blake did not want to risk aggravating his injury, allowing Hewitt a free ride into the third round. "It's still painful and it felt even worse this morning than it did last night,'' said Blake, who was set to back up less than 24 hours after his opening round win over Jurgen Melzer. "The adrenaline of playing the match (yesterday) kind of numbed it a little. "Now I notice it a lot more. If I were to go out there and try, I know I'd cause more harm. I can't afford to do that. "I hope (with) four, five days of rest, ice, ultrasound, all the other treatments ... it will be okay for (next week's) Cincinnati (Masters). "I need to be careful with the US Open coming up. I don't want to do something that's going to cause some serious damage.''
