First Time For Everything

On Friday afternoon at the 24th and final Acura Classic Tennis Tournament in San Diego (Carlsbad), California, former world number one Venus Williams suffered her first defeat since 1999. Venus made mistake after mistake and lost a match that I was certain she would win. Venus's confidence has been so apparent and demonstrative on the court that I just knew that Anna Chakvatadze was on her way home before she hit the court. Unfortunately, my prediction did not come to pass. While Anna, current number six on the WTA Tour did not necessarily play her best tennis either, it was enough to prevail and move on to the final where she will meet world number two Maria Sharapova.
“She saved her best for San Diego,” Williams said. “I was not at my best level. I'm really tired and it showed. Lots of things went wrong in my game tonight.” The score was 6-7(5-7), 7-6(7-3), 6-2.
Venus has been going non-stop since winning her fourth Wimbledon title in July, to include Fed Cup play where she won both of her singles rubbers. Let's hope that she gets some rest so that she can beat the tennis shorts off of the ladies at the U. S. Open!
