WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Wimbledon junior champion Donald Young and 6-foot-9 John Isner were among eight men granted wild cards for the U.S. Open by the U.S. Tennis Association on Wednesday.
Americans Alex Kuznetsov, Jesse Levine, Michael McClune, Waybe Odenik and Ryan Sweeting, along with Australia's Alun Jones, got spots in the main draw of the year's final Grand Slam tournament, which starts Aug. 27.
The 18-year-old Young is ranked No. 232 on the ATP Tour and won his first pro singles title this year on a minor-league circuit.
Isner recently rose from outside the top 400 to No. 192 in the rankings by reaching the final of his second career ATP tournament. He turned pro in May after leading Georgia to the NCAA tennis title.
Jones, who appeared in the movie "Wimbledon," is ranked a career-high 123rd. His wild card is part of a deal with Tennis Australia, which will give a wild card for the 2008 Australian Open to a player chosen by the USTA.
