MADRID, Spain - A dream clash between one of the greatest teams of all time and the hottest team of the year took Manolo Santana court for the doubles final of the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open on Saturday night - and it was the Williams sisters who managed to come out on top.

Having recently won their 11th Grand Slam title together at the Australian Open and seeded No.1 here, Venus and Serena came out on fire against No.8 seeds Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta, flying out to a 6-2, 3-0 lead. Dulko and Pennetta won five of the next six games to lead 5-4 with Pennetta getting a chance to serve for the set - but the Williamses regained control in a big way, taking 12 of the last 15 points of the match to dust off a 6-2, 7-5 victory.

"We're really excited to win. We've worked really hard. Today we played a team that is doing really well, too," Serena Williams commented. "We just try to be the best and have fun, whether No.1 comes with that or not. Our goal right now is to do well at the French - we didn't do well there last year.

"Venus is in the singles final here too - she's playing really well."

The Williams sisters now have 18 doubles titles as a team: 11 Grand Slam titles, two Olympic gold medals and five Sony Ericsson WTA Tour titles. They have an incredible 140-18 win-loss record together as a team (an 88.6 winning percentage). On Monday, they will rise from co-No.3s on the doubles rankings to co-No.2s - the highest they've ever been in the team discipline.

Serena Williams And Kim Clijsters Headline U.S. Open Semifinal Friday

Friday, September 11, 2009

Serena Williams brings her trademark intensity to the women’s semifinals, and opponent Kim Clijsters needs no reminding.

“I’ve seen her play here, and she has that face where she’s like, ‘Okay, I’m here to do business,’’’ Clijsters said.

Williams knows exactly what the Belgian is talking about. “I see it after in photos,” Williams said. “I’m pretty horrified sometimes. I think, ‘Oh, my God, who is that?’

’Despite Clijsters’ stellar play since coming out retirement, Williams goes in as the favorite. She’s also expected to clinch a third Grand Slam title this season and 12th overall.

The Williams-Clijsters showdown highlights Friday’s action, weather permitting, with teens Caroline Wozniacki and Yanina Wickmayer facing off in the other semifinal. Wozniacki, Denmark’s darling, and Wickmayer, Clijsters’ fellow Belgian, had never before appeared in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, much less a semifinal.

Williams leads Clijsters 7-1 in their head-to-heads and hasn’t dropped a set through five matches, avoiding the blips that sometimes accompany her early round Grand Slam encounters.

Williams heads the tournament in aces and points won behind her first serve. Ominously for Clijsters, Williams has only been broken in two matches, in the first and third rounds. She stepped up her game as the competition got better, overpowering Slovak Daniela Hantuchova and cruising past surging Italian Flavia Pennetta.

And here’s a stat – Williams’ last defeat in a Grand Slam semifinal came six years ago on the clay at the French Open, her least productive surface.

“It doesn’t mean that you don’t get a chance when you get to play her,” Clijsters, officially a wild card because she has no ranking yet, said. “That’s something I’ve always felt in the past, too. Every player always has a moment in a match where, whether it’s one or two games, they just kind of lose that aggressiveness a little bit or lose focus. It’s up to the other player to kind of feel that and step it up at that time.”

Clijsters, who captured her lone major at the US Open four years ago, has had a few bumps on her road to the semis, beginning in the first round against unpredictable Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli. Then in the fourth round, Clijsters fell 6-0 to Serena’s older sister, Venus, in the second set, recovering in the third.

Clijsters, like Williams, enters the clash with a 12-match winning streak in New York. A feel good story thanks to being one of the few moms on tour – and one of the most popular players around – Clijsters had the crowd on her side against Williams.

Her forehand is still big, and the movement still impressive. Williams, too, is coming off a marathon 2 ½ hour doubles semifinal Thursday.

“Seems like she’s even faster than what she was before,” Williams said after eliminating Pennetta. “I was thinking that maybe I should have a baby, and then I’ll come back faster. That was my observation, so I’m thinking about it.”

Luck Of The Draw: Venus And Serena On Opposite Sides In Paris

Black Tennis Pro's 2009 French Open Draw(Photo by ©FFT)

For a recent change of pace, American super sisters Venus and Serena Williams are in separate halves of the draw at the 2009 French Open with No. 3 seed Venus on a path to meet Russian Dinara Safina in the semi-finals.

Younger sister Serena, the tournament's No. 2 seed, has the more clay-specialist half of the draw, with the likes of 14th seed Flavia Pennetta due to face her in the Round of 16 and 7th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarters.

Italian Fed Cup Team Talkin' Smack

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Francesca Schiavone, Italy

Italy is hoping the Williams sisters decide to skip the Fed Cup final in November. Either way, though, the 2006 champions plan to host the United States in the best-of-five series on the slowest clay they can find.

"I hope the Williams sisters don't come," Italy captain Corrado Barazzutti told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "If they do come, we'll try to beat them. It's not impossible on clay. (Flavia) Pennetta has already beaten Venus more than once."

The 14th-ranked Pennetta beat Venus Williams twice last year _ including a victory at the French Open _ although Venus won their last two meetings.

Italy beat Russia 4-1 and the United States edged the Czech Republic 3-2 in the semifinals last weekend. The Williams sisters _ Venus and Serena _ skipped the trip to Brno, and Fed Cup rookies Alexa Glatch and Bethanie Mattek-Sands lined up for United States captain Mary Joe Fernandez.

The Nov. 7-8 final immediately follows the season-ending WTA Championships in Doha, and Barazzutti expects the Williams sisters to play there. Italy would like to host the final in the south to play outdoors on slow clay to soften the impact of the Williams sister's fierce groundstrokes.

"We're definitely going to play on clay _ very slow clay _ and if possible, outdoors," Barazzutti said. "First we need to determine if we can play outdoors, then we'll choose the most uncomfortable setting possible. Uncomfortable in the sense that it suits us and not the Americans."

Pennetta Axes Angela

Monday, March 16, 2009

Black Tennis Pro's Angela Haynes BNP Paribas OpenAngela Haynes

Sorry to see American Angela Haynes have to make her exit in the third round, she's put in the work on this one. Angela prevailed in the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw and has been playing well.

Black Tennis Pro's Flavia Pennetta BNP Paribas OpenFlavia Pennetta

I was definitely concerned when I saw that she was scheduled to play Italian Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta can be a force to be reckoned with on any given day. Although Angela was able to take the first set off of Pennetta, she wasn't able to mount enough game to hold on through the next two sets. Pennetta took the win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Hopefully we'll be seeing more of Angela in upcoming tour tournaments.

Poor Pennetta, Venus Unyielding In Taking 41st Title

Saturday, February 28, 2009

Black Tennis Pro's Venus Williams Abierto Mexicano Tecel Final
Got somewhere to go Venus?

My goodness! American Venus Williams took it to Italian Flavia Pennetta as if she had somewhere else important to go. The match lasted 62 minutes, but it seemed to go by much faster.

With an array of winning shots, five aces and a forehand that smacked everybody who doubts it in the face, Venus earned her 41st title at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco a short while ago.

Pennetta took her bruising like a woman though. After being assaulted 6-1, 6-2, she still smiled as she spoke Spanish during the trophy presentation.

Venus said she was sorry that she couldn't speak Spanish like Pennetta, but she did say "gracias," and "I hope to be back here next year."

Venus Wins 25th And Final Zurich Open

Sunday, October 19, 2008

Black Tennis Pro's Venus Williams Wins Zurich OpenWell, that was different...and a bit awkward.

At the 25th and final Zurich Open, American Venus Williams took her 38th title. She last won this title in 1999 at 19. “It is great to have my name on this tournament twice. It does not matter if it is the last final of a tournament, it is a final and you want to win, but it is great to get the last title of a tournament. I had always a good time in this city and I have good memories and it is definitely one of my favourite tournaments.”

It appears that Venus is now firmly into the season-ending WTA Tour Championship in Doha next month. “I'm obviously glad to be healthy to play the Championships and I am happy to have had this good week to going there. Next two weeks I go home and rest a little bit and then I prepare for Doha.”

It also appears that Flavia Penetta talked herself out of the win. She played so well in the semifinal but could not seem to find a groove today, especially after she lost the first set. It looked like she was practicing putting the ball into the net.

Now, on to the awkward trophy presentation. A well meaning but albeit strange serenade...yep, I said serenade. A singer stood in front of Venus on court and sang a version of Tina Turner's "Simply The Best." What?

The singer sang the song very well, that wasn't my issue. It was the fact that she was standing right in front of Venus kind of egging her on to get into the groove of her moment. Ever the trooper, Venus held her flowers and swayed from side to side with a smile as all of the other people stood around watching...creepy. Fortunately for the singer, Venus has a good spirit.

“I was very consistent today and I had a great service game, my service a weapon, when it gets in, it helps. She plays well but I had a lot less errors today and I felt good today too.”

Of course I try to get the highest rank possible and I think I have good chances to be number 1 again next year.”

“I did not talk to Serena yet, but she is always happy for me.”

After winning the match, Venus' father, Richard Williams, brought her dog Harold over for congratulations.

Kremlin Cup Over For Venus

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Black Tennis Pro's Venus Williams Kremlin CupAmerican Venus Williams will be leaving Moscow, Russia almost as swiftly as she arrived. The Kremlin Cup will not be hers to celebrate as she was knocked out of contention by Italy's Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta defeated Venus 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

"I totally came here because I love winning. I have never won this title, but I just had a day where I could not control my game. She played well."

Well, at least she seems, as usual, to have a good head about it. Life goes on.
