Thursday At Roland Garros: It's Showtime!
Thursday, May 28, 2009
The gentlemen who are playing at home in France truly put on electric performances on Thursday at Roland Garros.
Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils showed up and showed out!
Monfils was a series of shot making expertise on Court Suzanne Lenglen against Romanian Victor Crivoi at roughly the same time that Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was experiencing a battle royale with Argentine Juan Monaco on Court Philippe Chartrier. It is more than obvious that the next gen of French players has arrived.
Monfils said, "The new generation is always playing all right, I think, in the French."
In one of the best match points at net that I've seen, Tsonga ended the explosive contest against Monaco 7-5, 2-6, 6-1, 710-68. Make no bones about it though, Monaco gave as good as he got.
"That was a great win for me against a real clay courter - a serious competitor," said Tsonga. I played with my heart and with the public getting behind me like that it was so emotional."
While Monfils' match did not end in the fire of Tsonga's, the match overall showed Monfils in his acrobatic glory - fabulous!
Between Monfils, Tsonga, Simon and Ouanna, the French will definitely be holding their own at home.

Gael Monfils And Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Back-To-Back As They Head To The Top
Thursday, April 30, 2009
Two of the hottest tickets on the ATP World Tour are Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils. As the world rankings shifted on Monday, April 27, these two each bumped up one spot - Monfils to World No. 9 and Tsonga to World No. 10.
Fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon also ascended from World No. 9 to 7. The wind seems to be blowing very nicely towards France.

A Tale Of Two Frenchmen: Tsonga In... Monfils Out
Tuesday, March 31, 2009
Both Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France have become very captivating players on the ATP Tour. Knowing that they have an upcoming match always gives me great anticipation to see the power and flair that I know each of them will bring.
Today was a split decision on all fronts.
Up first, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's opponent was one of his very own, Frenchman Gilles Simon. Tsonga seemed to be a bit rocky at first. It is my understanding that he felt ill before the match. I thought he looked a bit ill during the changeovers in yesterday's match. Whatever the matter, after dropping the first set, Tsonga was able to pull himself together sufficiently to take the next two sets and defeat Simon 6-7(4-7), 6-3, 6-2.
Now in the quarterfinals, something no other Frenchman has done in Miami in the last ten years, Tsonga will face Serbian Novak Djokovic. Tsonga has had Djokovic's number over their last several meetings, we'll see if the trend continues.
Up next, Gael Monfils and American Andy Roddick. I am still so traumatized that it's difficult to speak on the match.
Monfils beautifully broke Andy Roddick at 5-5 in the first set to go up 6-5. He previously held serve relatively comfortably for every other game, but what does he do after breaking Roddick? He drops serve, gets into a tiebreak and forgets how to play tennis.
The balance of the match was an uphill battle for Monfils. A battle he lost to Roddick 7-6(2), 6-4.
I have a headache.

Venus, Serena And Tsonga Prevail
Monday, March 30, 2009
Sunday was neither a day of rest or salvation for top players Dinara Safina, Ana Ivanovic, Vera Zvonareva or Nadia Petrova. Each player was knocked out in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open.
Americans Venus and Serena Williams did not fall victim to the Sunday blues of the other ladies. Both Venus and Serena displayed convincing wins as they moved into the round of 16.
German Anna-Lena Groenefeld fell in straight sets to Venus 7-5, 6-3, and China's Shuai Peng did likewise to Serena 7-5, 6-2.
Up next for Venus is Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska and Serena will play China's Jie Zheng.
In a fairly routine victory, Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga knocked out American qualifier Robert Kendrick 7-5, 6-4.
Tsonga will confront fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon in the round of 16.

Tsonga Seeking First 2009 Title In South African Final
Saturday, February 7, 2009
Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eased past Frederico Gil 6-3, 6-4 at the SA Tennis Open on Saturday to set up an all-French final at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament at the Montecasino in northern Johannesburg. Earlier, fifth seed Jeremy Chardy (pictured) had saved three match points as he defeated World No. 13 David Ferrer 1-6, 7-6(9), 7-6(4).
It is the first all-French final on the ATP World Tour since Gilles Simon defeated Julien Benneteau in the Casablanca final in May 2008. It will be the first meeting between Tsonga and Chardy.
World No. 14 Tsonga advanced to his fourth ATP World Tour final after breaking serve three times from four opportunities in his 64-minute victory over first-time semi-finalist Gil. The right-hander, who has yet to drop a set this week, reached his first ATP World Tour final at the 2008 Australian Open (l. to Djokovic) and later that year captured his first two ATP World Tour titles at Bangkok (d. Djokovic) and the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis event in Paris (d. Nalbandian).
Despite missing three months of the 2008 ATP World Tour season with a knee injury, the Le Mans native finished inside the Top 10 at No. 6 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings and qualified for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai (now re-named the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals to be held at London’s O2 Arena in November).

Blake Hits Wicked Shots, Insufficient To Topple Tsonga; Monfils Out, Serena Survives

~~AUSTRALIAN OPEN ROUND OF 16~~

Tsonga showed visions of the impressive play that took him to the final of the Australian Open in '08. This straight set 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (3) win places Tsonga into the quarterfinals.

The two resumed the match but Azarenka's health continued to worsen. After a really weak swing at the ball she began to cry, covered her face, walked to the net and retired from the match. Serena seemed to be very concerned and supportive as she spoke with Azarenka.
Serena said, “honestly, I got worried. I was like, ‘Oh, my goodness.’ Because she started like walking really slow. The last thing she would want to do, to me, would be fall. It was just weird.”
“Hopefully she’ll be okay. She’s young, so she will have plenty of opportunity to do better.”
This retirement win places Serena into the quarterfinals.

Simon said, "well, you never want to win like this. It's already strange when it's another player, but when it's a friend like Gael it's more difficult."

Check Out Blake Getting His Swing On In Cincinnati: Against Simon and With The Reds
Thursday, July 31, 2008
American James Blake seems to be having a lot better time this week than he has been having over the previous few. Even his stance is more confident. Alright Blake, work it out!
In round 2 of the Western and Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati, Ohio, Blake took out the most-recent-to-rise tennis sensation Gilles Simon of France, 6-4, 6-3. Not only did Blake send Simon packing, he did it with apparent ease in roughly an hour.
"I'm just as surprised as anyone," Blake said. "I figured it was going to be a really tough match."
It was here in Cincinnati in 2007 that Blake made it to the final against Roger Federer. It appears that Blake has reached "his" time of the year.
"This is always the time of year I appreciate most," said Blake, who improved to 24-8 on hard courts. "I've had my best results on this kind of court, getting ready for the U.S. Open. So it fits my game the best, and I feel good and healthy and strong."
Additionally, Blake is also spending a little time with a different sport. He got in a bit of batting practice before a Reds game on Saturday.
