Roland Garros 2011: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, "Which Player Would You Choose?..."
Saturday, May 28, 2011
Which player would you choose…
To share a good bottle of wine with?
(Thinks for a while) Mika Llodra, he knows his stuff.
To take to your favourite restaurant?
Kei Nishikori, because my favourite restaurant is Minori in Paris. It's a great Japanese restaurant. I'll show him that French sushi is better than Japanese sushi (laughs).
To accompany you to the Cannes film festival?
Ana Ivanovic. She would be great arm candy.
To play in a film with?
David Ferrer. He'd play Forrest in Forrest Gump, and I'd play Bubba, his shrimp fishing friend.
To go out on the town with in Las Vegas?
La Monf' (Gaël Monfils), no question about it.
To play in a band with?
Dustin Brown, that would be great. We'd make beautiful reggae.
As master of ceremonies for your wedding?
Novak Djokovic, he would be great at that.
To take to a football match?
Jurgen Melzer. I played football with him in the United States, and he's really good. He loves it.
To go and see stand-up comedy with?
Andy Roddick.
To take fishing?
Rafael Nadal.
To open a bar with?
Marat Safin. Once night falls he's the guy to hang around with.

Gratuitous Tummy Shot: My Fav Russian Working It Out
Wednesday, July 29, 2009
LOS ANGELES — Marat Safin, playing for the fourth time in three days, summoned enough energy to beat Ernests Gulbis 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the L.A. Tennis Open on Wednesday.
Safin, who played an exhibition match against Pete Sampras on Monday and beat Robby Ginepri the following night, also teamed with Igor Kunitsyn to win a first-round doubles match on Monday.
The win over Gulbis put the two-time Grand Slam champion into his first quarterfinal of the year and earned him at least a day off from singles play.
He will meet the winner of Wednesday night's match between Tommy Haas, the top seed and two-time event champion, and Jesse Levine on Friday.

What's My Name! Take Note, Frenchman Josselin Ouanna Making Noise At Roland Garros
Wednesday, May 27, 2009

The very tempered but stragetgic Ouanna held on in a tight 4 hour and 34 minute match to take out Safin in a 77-62, 77-64, 4-6, 3-6, 10-8 victory.
Safin, who has vowed to retire at the end of the season, lost the first set on a tie-break and the pattern repeated itself in the second.
The Russian appeared to have the mental edge after he saved four set points while serving at 5-6 but Ouanna stayed focused in the breaker to open a two-set lead.
However, Safin's famous temperament was held in check as he launched a fightback.
A single break of serve in both the third and fourth sets saw him level match - Ouanna missing six break points in the process.
Safin, a semi-finalist at Roland Garros in 2002, looked set to roll on to victory when he broke early in the decider, but he allowed Ouanna to hit back and level at 3-3 - Safin slamming a ball into the stands in disgust and picking up a warning in the process.
The Russian saved match points at 4-5 (with an ace) and at 5-6 (with a brilliant forehand winner) but when Ouanna fashioned more chances at 8-9 he finally cracked.
One was saved but when Safin sent a forehand wide on the next it was all over.
Ouanna progresses to a third-round meeting with Fernando Gonzalez, the 12th seed.

Tsonga Topples Safin, Ljubicic Waiting

BBC Sports -Ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga booked his place in the second round of the Madrid Masters with a 6-4 7-5 win over former world number one Marat Safin.
The powerful Frenchman recorded a single break in each set to defeat the unseeded 29-year-old Russian.
Tsonga sealed the first set at the first opportunity with a firm drive that clipped the baseline.
The match concluded when an errant Safin collapsed to 0-40 down on his serve, and though he saved one match point, the next attempted winner went wide.
"I'm happy with my game," 24-year-old Tsonga commented. "I played great tennis, offensive tennis. I hit some good serves, some good volleys and I was really aggressive, so I'm happy."
Tsonga now faces wildcard Ivan Ljubicic.

This Is One Of The Primary Reasons I'm Going To Miss Safin
After his loss to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Monday at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Masters Tournament, Russian Marat Safin was asked how he thought he would be remembered after retiring at the end of 2009. Safin said, "They can remember me how they want, the US Open champion in 2000 and winner of the Australian Open title in 2005. I don't care. I'm not really thinking about it all day."
"Life is waiting for me after," he added with a smile."
Love it - he couldn't care less.

Monfils And Safin Take It To The Limit!
Monday, March 30, 2009
On Sunday Frenchman Gael Monfils and Russian Marat Safin played the best match of the Sony Ericsson Open thus far hands down. Okay, of all the matches I've seen - which has been most.
Monfils and Safin took fans through damn near every emotion possible - joy, pain, anger, elation, anticipation, and on and on and on. I was so glad when it was over, I couldn't take any more.
To achieve the victory Monfils rallied from 2-5 down in the third set, and saved two match points on his way to a win that concluded the only way that it could have... in a tiebreak. Fortunately for Monfils and very unfortunately for Safin, Safin's serve went way south during the tiebreak.
After nearly three hours Monfils defeated Safin 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(3).
Of his performance, Monfils said, “It wasn't a good match for me today, I played very badly. I mean, I just survived. I never give up on the court. I had luck because he missed two shots on his match point, but purely tennistically [sic] it was very empty today. Nothing. Maybe I have a good serve sometime.”
And you drove those of us watching nuts!! But congratulation nonetheless.
Next up for Monfils is American Andy Roddick in the round of 16.

I'll Miss This Russian
Wednesday, January 21, 2009
I'm probably late on finding this out, but my favorite Russian dish of tennis player is currently playing his last season on the ATP Tour. Twenty-eight year old Marat Safin says that he's had enough stress.
I've always enjoyed watching Safin play, you never quite knew what to expect. When he's on, he's on, and vice versa. A lot of players I probably wouldn't even notice if they left, but Safin...this guy I'll miss.
Here's some of what Safin had to say regarding his impending retirement:
"I don't want to get stressed, I don't want to plan anything," he said.
"I want to play and be relaxed, no stress. Whatever comes, comes.
"It's great for me. Just try to be in shape, be able to run around the court. Like this it's much easier to play tennis.
"At least I want to enjoy it. I don't want to suffer anymore, I don't want to get stressed, I don't want to feel bad on the court anymore."
"It's not easy because you're under continuous tennis pressure, which is traveling around the world, practising every day, be in shape, try to be a little bit more responsible what you're doing outside the court," he said.
"It's getting tougher and tougher with the age, especially with the injuries I've had throughout the years.
"It's not an easy game, let's put it this way, especially if half of the time you've been injured."
"When you are young, 20 years old, 19 years old, you're coming, everything is new, it's exciting to come and play the big matches," he said.
"With the years, you start to feel the pressure.
"A little bit you start to be unsure in certain moments of the match, hit it down the line or play a little bit cross-court.
"So you start to feel a little bit uncomfortable on the court, and this is what makes you have doubts.
"Eventually it comes to the errors. The young boys are not scared anymore. They will eventually be scared with the years, but it's tough to play against them in such conditions."
But when asked about when he would eventually walk away, as he has previously indicated, Safin would not be drawn.
"No, I'm enjoying it, it's just a different way of enjoying myself," he said.
"(But) you need to keep yourself fully committed to the tennis -- it's getting tougher and tougher."

Megawatt Star Power At U.S. Open Opening Ceremony
Tuesday, August 26, 2008
“On behalf of the city of New York, welcome to the one and only U.S. Open,” said Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg.
This year’s Open celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the tournament and the first tournament of the Open Era. From 1881 until 1968, the U.S. National Championship was limited to amateurs. In 1968 the modern era of tennis was born when the US Open replaced the U.S. National Championship and opened its doors to all who qualified to compete.
Since 1968, Bloomberg said that the US Open is “the best attended annual sporting event in the world.”
The host of the evening's festivities was Oscar winning actor Forrest Whitaker, who spoke about the history of the tournament and the tumultuous year of 1968.
In 1968, the U.S. became even more embroiled in the Vietnam War, protests and social unrest erupted throughout the country, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed, and the highly politicized summer Olympic games took place in Mexico City. And in 1968 Arthur Ashe became the first ever men’s champion and the first ever African American Champion of the U.S. Open, which was held at West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York, for the first time, becoming one of the only bright spots during a difficult year for the country.
In honor of that special moment in tennis history, Whitaker introduced a procession of 25 past champions of the tournament including Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe and her daughter Camera Ashe as well as Virginia Wade, the first women’s singles US Open champion.
