Sweet Sixteen! Sloane Stephens Earns First WTA Win

Friday, March 12, 2010

Black Tennis Pro's Sloane Stephens BNP Paribas OpenSloane Stephens, one of two 16-year-olds in the BNP Paribas Open field, celebrated her first match on the WTA Tour with a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7) triumph over Lucie Hradecka.

Stephens led 5-2 in the second set and had match point on serve in the ninth game, then had to rally from 3-6 down in the second-set tiebreaker.

"I wasn't getting nervous," Stephens said. "She started playing a lot more. Before, she was hitting a lot of balls off the court and I was waiting for the error. She made me play at the end."

Stephens said she'll remember hitting an ace down the middle of the court to get to 6-all in the second-set tiebreaker. She couldn't recall the final shot of the match, though, but said "it was a good moment."

Fellow American Shenay Perry didn't fare as well as Stephens, losing to Karolina Sprem 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Sloane Stephens and Shenay Perry Qualify For BNP Paribas Open Main Draw

Black Tennis Pro's Sloane Stephens BNP Paribas Open Main DrawTwelve women, including Americans Shenay Perry and Sloane Stephens, booked their places in the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open after winning their second-round qualifying matches on Tuesday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Perry went the distance against Chinese Taipei’s Chang Kai-Chen, withstanding 16 aces off her opponent’s racquet to earn a 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(2) win in two hours and 15 minutes. The 25-year-old Perry, currently ranked No. 103, will be making her fourth appearance in the main draw. She made her best showing in 2006, when she reached the third round before falling to Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic.

Sixteen-year-old Stephens, a wild card entry in the qualification draw, cruised past Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-1, 6-3. The 623rd-ranked Stephens is making her debut at the BNP Paribas Open. She enjoyed success in juniors last year, reaching the semi-finals at Roland Garros and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

Fed Cup: Shenay Perry Joins 2010 Roster And Blogs From France

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Black Tennis Pro's Shenay Perry 2010 US Fed Cup Team2010 United States Fed Cup Team
(L-R) Captain Mary Joe Fernandez, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Shenay Perry, Melanie Oudin and Liezel Huber.

The U.S. Fed Cup Team is in Lievin, France this week to open its 2010 season against the French team. U.S. Captain Mary Joe Fernandez is leading a team of Liezel Huber, Melanie Oudin, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Shenay Perry in what the team hopes will be the first victory on the way to the 2010 Fed Cup crown. During the days leading up to the competition on February 6-7, different team members will be blogging each day about practicing, their daily adventures, team bonding and more. After Huber started the week off, Perry follows in the second blog as she talks about the first team practice, the clay court and playing Charades. Check back each day to see who is writing next!

Black Tennis Pro's Shenay Perry US Fed Cup Team Blogs From FranceShenay Perry - February 3, 2010

Hi Everyone! After Liezel's great leadoff blog yesterday, it is my turn today. The entire team has now arrived here in Lievin – we got here yesterday – and today was the first day of team practice, which I thought went pretty well. It was short this morning but we did do a few two-on-ones so it was a good, productive hit. I hit with both Melanie and Liezel and we did a few one-on-one circuit drills as well when one of us took a break.

This is the first time I have played Fed Cup since 2006 and my first with Mary Joe as captain but for me the team had already meshed before we even got here. This was the first day we have all been together but Bethanie and I both attended the same tennis academy as teenagers so we have been friends for a long time and I know both Melanie and Liezel pretty well. So I think it is going great so far with our team bonding.

Today was my first day out on the clay court at the stadium. It is indoors, which is a good thing since it poured rain yesterday and today. I think the surface is pretty similar to the one at Roland Garros. It plays a little quick, which I think will be good for us, and it had some good bounces for a clay court. As a whole, I feel all right on clay, I guess my results speak for themselves as I have played pretty decently on clay in my career. As long as I have the results, I feel comfortable!

I know the team has a tradition of playing Charades and/or Pictionary during Fed Cup week and I am a little nervous about it. I am just hoping someone will pick me for her team and if they do that I do not get booted for being too bad! I have heard there are plans in the works to play tonight for the first time so it looks like I will probably be forced into it. Wish me luck!

Shenay

Australian Open Day 2: A Wealth Of Wins

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Black Tennis Pro's Donald Young vs Christophe Rochus AO 2010Way to go Donald... great performance!

American Donald Young persevered in a four-set match with Belgium's Christophe Rochus that saw him down a set from the jump. Donald put it in gear though and took the next three sets with a win coming in at 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.

Donald said “If he would have played the whole match the way he did that first set, he would have got me again. He couldn’t miss.”

After having come through the qualifying event to enter the main draw he states, “When I’m feeling good about myself, I play better, when I’m down I don’t play as well.”

Black Tennis Pro's Venus Williams vs Lucie Safarova AO 2010American Venus Williams cruised past Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic easily, defeating her her 6-2, 6-2. Post match Venus said, "I feel like I have so much left in my strings to accomplish, I love playing. I want to win each tournament I play. I want to win the majors, play doubles, and be in the Olympics."

Always being asked about age and retirement as she approaches 30 this year, of playing younger players Venus says,
"To be honest, when you're on the court, age doesn't matter. So far, I'm fast and strong and maintaining that is great."

Black Tennis Pro's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs Sergiy Stakhovsky AO 2010Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has continued his love affair with the Australian Open, sailing through to the second round after a straight-sets win over Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky on Hisense Arena on Tuesday.

The Frenchman, seeded No. 10, put on a powerful and athletic display that entertained the sizeable crowd. Showing no signs of the wrist injury that afflicted him in the lead-up to the tournament, he prevailed 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 51 minutes.

Black Tennis Pro's James Blake vs. Arnaud Clement AO 2010American James Blake continues to look like a man on a mission in his 7-5, 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Frenchman Arnaud Clement. Blake seems so much more poised and focused as he begins his 2010 campaign - impressive.

Blake himself is pleased with his current serve execution, “I only got broken once in three sets against a guy who puts so many returns in the court … a good feeling - got a few free points and served at a high percentage for me. I am pretty proud of the work we did on my serve in the off-season.

Black Tennis Pro's Serena Williams vs. Urszula Radwanska AO 2010American Serena Williams made quick work of her first opponent, Poland's Urszula Radwanska who also has a big sister on the tour (Agnieszka). Serena pummled Radwanswka for a little over an hour to arrive at a decisive 6-2, 6-1 victory.

“I was happy to get through,” Serena said. “The scoreline seemed to be easy, but there were tough points. So I was just happy to get it over with.

“She plays really well. I think her game has definitely come on. I feel like she's more consistent. You know, it's a different score than Wimbledon, but still I think that she's more consistent and a little better ‑ a lot better.”

Black Tennis Pro's Gael Monfils vs. Matthew Ebden AO 2010Frenchman Gael Monfils completed his rain-delayed match against Australian Matthew Ebden, winning the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Black Tennis Pro's Shenay Perry vs. Ana Ivanovic AO 2010American Shenay Perry was unable to find a solution for her match with Serbian Ana Ivanovic. She was defeated 2-6, 3-6.

Black Tennis Pro's Kateryna Bondarenko 2009 U.S. Open Round 2After fighting her way into the main draw of the U.S. Open via qualifying, American Shenay Perry was unceremoniously bounced by Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko in round two.

Bondarenko seems to be building momentum by first eliminating Serbian Ana Ivanovic in round one, and now Perry. She defeated Perry 6-1, 6-1 - ouch!

Perry had a straight sets win over Monica Niculescu of Romania in round one 6-4, 6-2.

Shenay Perry, Josselin Ouanna And Donald Young Enter U.S. Open Main Draw

Sunday, August 30, 2009

(l-r) Frenchman Josselin Ouanna and Brazilian Julio Silva on day five of U.S. Open qualifying.

While the top tour players rocked out with Will Ferrell and Jordin Sparks at the annual Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, a handful of US Open hopefuls were still fighting it out on the outer courts. This soggy Saturday marked the final round of qualifying, and thanks to rain delays carried over from Friday, it was a packed schedule.

Americans Shenay Perry and Donald Young and Frenchman Josselin Ouanna remained standing after it was all over. Wish it could have been more.

The matches broke down like this:

Shenay Perry, USA defeated Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier 6-4, 6-4

Donald Young, USA defeated Lukas Rosol, CZE 6-3, 6-4

Josselin Ouanna defeated Julio Silva 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Shenay Perry Wins USTA Movie Gallery Pro Classic

Monday, April 27, 2009

Shenay Perry

Shenay Perry’s road to recovery from knee surgery in late 2007 took a big step Sunday.

Perry of Coral Springs, Fla., defeated Carly Gullickson of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in Sunday’s USTA Movie Gallery Pro Classic final at Westgate Tennis Center, winning in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-3).

The two are close friends and roomed together this week. Perry, who is unseeded, knocked off the eighth-seeded Gullickson for her third straight win over a seeded player. She beat No. 1 Patricia Mayr in the semifinals and No. 7 Angela Haynes in the prior round.

The 24-year-old Perry was ranked No. 40 in the world in 2006, but had right knee surgery in August 2007 and missed a full year of singles play.

In 2006, she was the only American to make the round of 16 at the prestigious Wimbledon tournament.

“It’s great,” Perry said. “It gives me a lot of motivation to know that I can still go out and play at a high level of tennis. I’m pretty happy about that.”

Perry won three doubles titles last year — two with Gullickson — and a 50K singles title in Lawrenceville, Ga., last October.

Her title Sunday was in a tournament with a purse of $75,000. She pocketed $11,400 and 110 ranking points for winning the tournament and Gullickson won $6,080 with 78 ranking points.

But she started off slow, falling 6-4 in the first set as Gullickson won the last three games. Perry dominated the second set with a 6-1 win and didn’t have much trouble in the third with a 6-3 win.

“It was just really tough,” Perry said. “We were both pretty nervous. I don’t think either one of us played our game. I got some opportunities at good times and I think that’s what helped me out.”

Shenay Perry And Donald Young Into USTA Pro Circuit Finals

Americans Shenay Perry and Carly Gullickson

At the Movie Gallery Pro Classic tennis tournament in Dothan, Alabama at the Westgate Tennis Center on Saturday, American Shenay Perry advanced to the event's final when her opponent Austrian Patricia Mayr retired at 6-3, 2-1, Perry leading.

When asked about the win Perry said, “I will take anything , I felt like I was playing pretty good.”

In the other semifinal American Carly Gullickson defeated Russian Evgeniya Rodina 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Gullickson and Perry are good friends and have played together on occasion as doubles partners. The two have played each other in singles competition twice — each winning once.

“Playing each other in the finals would be fun,” Gullickson said before the second semifinal match began.

Sunday's final will be the first championship match of the year for both players.

“I’ve never done well here before,” Perry said. “I always hate to play a friend, but playing against Gullickson will be fun.”

Black Tennis Pro's Donald Young and John Isner Tallahassee Tennis ChallengerAmericans Donald Young and John Isner

At the USTA Tallahassee Tennis Challenger Presented by Comcast at Forestmeadows in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday, Donald Young, who defeated Robert Kendrick 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals, met John Isner in the championship match.

The first set went back and forth, with both players holding serve until 5-5. On Young’s serve, Isner was able to capitalize on his second break chance to take the lead 6-5. Young was able to save one set point, but Isner’s serve proved to be too much, as the former Bulldog pulled out the set 7-5.

“Donald had some chances to break me because I started off a little slow,” Isner said. “I was fortunate to get out of some jams on my serve, and that helped me gain momentum. Once I got a look at a break point, I played a pretty good point and converted.”

Young was defeated by the former Georgia Bulldog 7-5, 6-4.
