USA Works It Out On Clay: USA 2, Austria 0

Friday, February 8, 2008

James Blake recovered to defeat Stefan Koubek 5-7 7-5 6-2 6-2 to put USA 2-0 ahead in its World Group first round tie with Austria in Vienna after Andy Roddick won a five-set thriller against Jurgen Melzer.

"I knew my match against Jurgen would be my toughest," said Roddick. "He played great but I was finally able to get to him in the fifth set."

The American repeated his criticism of the court: "It was terrible. It was only laid on Tuesday and clay needs time to settle.

"It's the same for both players, but it's a shame when points are decided by the court and not the players."

Playing on his less-favored clay court, Blake survived losing the first set from one break up and hit back to level things up before running away with the last two sets for a convincing victory that puts USA firmly in control of this tie.

“It was a really hard match, but I am very happy to have won. A 2-0 lead after the first day is a very good starting point,” said Blake, who was all smiles. “I started really well, but half way through the match, I lost my rhythm and that was it,” a disappointed Koubek commented.

Bob and Mike Bryan, whose last Davis Cup outing saw them secure the 2007 trophy, will aim to wrap things up for the champions on Saturday against Melzer and Julian Knowle.

Brave Pavel Bows To Tsonga's Power

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga began his Davis Cup career with a spectacular win over Andrei Pavel 6-7(2) 6-4 6-4 6-4, giving France a 2-0 lead at the end of the opening day in Sibiu.

Pavel warned those who were expecting a French formality this weekend, “I have a lot of experience in Davis Cup, and I intend to give the rookie a hard time.” Romania’s no. 1 player indeed showed the extent of his talent and experience to force Tsonga into playing his best tennis.

Yet, France’s no. 2 player displayed power and confidence to prevail after a close four setter.

"Build Muscle, Burn Fat and Lose Weight at My Fitness Hut, Her Fitness Hut and Sports Fitness Hut!"

For those of you not familiar with My Fitness Hut, Her Fitness Hut or Sports Fitness Hut, I'd like to introduce you to the gentlemen behind them, Mark Eagle. Mark is a Certified Fitness Trainer and former NCAA Division I athlete. He does training for adults and teens, sports specific training, core training, strength/balance/flexibility/nutrition training.

Mark has just completed a new ebook entitled "Strength and Power Training For Athletes." As its title suggests, it is NOT just for athletes. Mark tells me that "you don't have to compete in sports to train like an athlete, you can use this tool as a coach, parent, player or exerciser."

I decided to share this information with my readers because Mark sent me a copy of his ebook and after reviewing it, I realized that it is indeed a valuable tool for fitness on every level including weight loss, something that most of us are always concerned with.

Mark is going to expand his ebooks to include his next project, "Burn Fat and Have a Lean Body For Life." I'll be needing that quick Mark, I had a delicious Christmas holiday.

OFF TOPIC: Old School Mama!

A teary-eyed second grader says he learned his lesson about responsibility.

His mother made him stand on a street corner across from his school Wednesday with a sign that read, "I was rude to my teacher. I can't come to school. I'm sorry."

Marcia Harvey said her son just made the honor roll at Brentwood Elementary. But she said he he had a lapse in judgement and acted up in class.

Harvey says she loves her son very much but she wanted to teach him a lesson about making good choices, and the consequences of making bad ones.

"I want him to be successful in life," said Harvey. "This is something I thought of that would maybe get his attention."

It did.

"I got to be good in school," the boy said as tears rolled down his face.

Others noticed and offered encouragement.

A crew picking up garbage drove by and shouted, "Be good, stay in school!"

Day 1, Monday, Feb. 4:

I finally made it to Midland, Mich. I had the worst and longest flight ever. I left LA at 9:55 p.m. to land in Atlanta at 4:30 a.m. and have a 5-hour layover. Talk about tired! I slept the whole way to Midland, so I was good once I got to the courts.

There is snow everywhere. I love the snow, so it isn't a problem for me. When I got to the tennis center, I sat down and watched my doubles partner, Mashona Washington, play. She lost in the third, 6-7. What a tough match she played.

I had my first hit at 4. The courts here are so fast, so it took me a minute before I got my rhythm. I was spraying balls all over the place for a good 20 minutes. After that I played some points, and everything started to fall into place. I am feeling really strong and good about myself, too, so I think that I should have a good week.

This tournament is run so well, and the atmosphere is great. They treat us like real professionals here, so I am excited to play this week. I am glad that I don't play tomorrow so that I can get an extra day to practice and get used to these fast courts.

After my hit, I went back to my housing and relaxed for a while before I had some dinner. I am staying with some friends here – the Mils Family. The boys love me. They are so energetic, so I am playing with them most of the time when they get home from school. There was a players’ party tonight that I didn't go to because I was just too sleepy.

I need to get some rest now, so this is the end of my first blog. I hope that you enjoyed it. Don't worry, the others will be more interesting.

Day 2, Tuesday, Feb. 5:

What a long day. I slept like a baby fresh out of the womb. I was up at 8:15 and on my way to the courts at 9. All I had was a handful of Lucky Charms and then was on my way out the door.

I got to the courts at 9:25 and had to go to Auburn Elementary School to talk to 90 fifth graders. I was nervous, but they were actually easy to talk to and very funny. They interacted with me a lot, so my hour went by pretty fast. I even got a little love letter from a boy -- how cute! They're so innocent at that age, then something goes terribly wrong.

After my talk with the children, I went back to the courts and watched a few matches, since I am playing a qualifier in the first round. I had to hit at 12 p.m., and there was so much confusion on that because the girl that I had to hit with at 1 p.m. wanted to at 12 instead, for 45 minutes. That was fine with me because I was hitting for two hours, anyway.

My first hit (Victoria Kutzova) said that she didn't mind switching the time, but apparently she did because I ended up hitting with her at 12, anyway, and she and the other girl ended up having an argument on court. I could care less because I still got my hits in.

My hit with Victoria went pretty smoothly. I am playing well, but I am still trying to get used to these fast courts. I should be good by tomorrow, now that I figured out that I play Neha Uberoi. I have played her once before a few years ago, and I beat her. I am just going to play my game and give 110 percent.

I am second on after 10 in the morning for my singles, then I have doubles fifth on, so I am going to warm up at 9:30. I am playing doubles this week with Mashona Washington. I think we will do well.

My day was about over around 7 p.m. I finally made it home, then I had some dinner, which was pasta with red sauce and a salad.

I am so tired today because I spent most of my day at the tennis center. I think that I will head to bed around 8, like a usually do.

Well, good night everyone. Talk to you tomorrow.
