Williams Sisters Complete Wimbledon Win With Doubles Glory

Saturday, July 5, 2008

Black Tennis Pro's Wimbledon 2008Black Tennis Pros Wimbledon 2008Don't you just love them?

The American doubles team of sisters Venus and Serena Williams returned to Wimbledon’s Centre Court to win the women’s doubles title on Saturday night.

Hours after Venus beat Serena in straight sets in the third all-Williams singles final at the All England Club, the sisters teamed up to beat fellow American Lisa Raymond and Australia’s Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-2.

Black Tennis Pros Wimbledon 2008The Williams sisters broke twice in each set to complete a double they last achieved in 2002, when Serena clinched the singles crown.

Venus Wins Fifth Venus Rosewater Dish

Black Tennis Pro's Wimbledon 2008With mixed emotions, defending Wimbledon title holder American Venus Williams expressed a very muted celebration after winning the second championship point against sister Serena Williams. Venus defeated Serena 7-5, 6-4.

The match was well contested, the ladies played as well as they could given the windy conditions and worn baseline grass. The worst part of the match was the noticeably silent crowd. I don't believe that I've EVER witnessed such silence before. It made it seem like something ominous was on its way. Perhaps for Serena, it was.

Serena began to look a bit dejected towards the end of the first set. By the middle of the second set, she was ready to kill her obviously uncooperative racquet. She managed to hold off on that act. Unfortunately though, she never really seemed to be able to find a way to successfully fend off big sister's title defense, thus her gloomy demeanor continued throughout the rest of the match.

Venus, on the other hand, was clearly seeking a win. She was focused, determined and very athletic in her pursuit of this win. She was all over the court throughout the match. It was wonderful to see. She even, once again, broke her own serve speed record, bumping it up to 129mph.

Fortunately for those of us who are Williams sisters fans, we had already won. The actual winner of the tournament would be more of a formality than a decision. While I'm over the moon to see Venus win her fifth Wimbledon title, I would have been just as happy to see Serena win.

During the trophy presentation Venus went immediately into big sister mode trying to ensure that Serena was okay.

"I can't believe that it's five, but when you're in the match against Serena Williams, five seems so far away from that first point. I mean, she played so awesome that it was really a task to beat her."

I loved when Venus acknowledged how difficult it was for all of her family to watch the two of them play one another, and followed with, "I'd like to think that they want me to win, but." The crowd got a nice laugh out of that one.

It was a great tournament, full of upsets and surprises. The 2008 Wimbledon Championships were thoroughly enjoyable.

Venus and Serena Strategizing: A Scary Sight

Black Tennis Pro's Wimbledon 2008
It must be a woeful sight during the Ladies Doubles matches for any team to look across the net and see two of the most dangerous female tennis players in the world putting their heads together to plot the demise of your game.

It's not enough that they each hold Wimbledon titles, but it's overkill that they share 14 grand slam titles. I give credit to all of the ladies that meet these two on the court and take any games, let alone sets off of them. Especially when they are as focused as they are right now.

Black Tennis Pro's Wimbledon 2008
Venus and Serena are both now into the semifinals of the Ladies Singles and Ladies Doubles events. It has been a while since we've seen both of these ladies so energized and dedicated at the same time, and working their way towards the final(s) of a grand slam. Beautiful.

I'm lovin' it!
