Scoville Jenkins And Donald Young Knocked Out Of Contention For French Open Wild Card Slot

Friday, May 1, 2009

By Michelle Kaufman at The Miami Herald

The 2009 French Open isn't until the end of May, but qualifying has officially begun in Boca Raton this week.

Eight U.S. men and 11 women are competing for a wild card spot into the main draw as part of a reciprocal agreement with the French tennis federation in which two Americans get slots at Roland Garros and two French players get spots in the U.S. Open.

Jesse Levine, a 21-year-old from Boca Raton, is giving his friends and family plenty to cheer about as he reached Thursday's final against top seed John Isner. Levine, the No. 2 seed, beat Donald Young 6-1, 6-3 in Wednesday's semifinal and Isner knocked out Scoville Jenkins 6-3, 7-6 (7-1). The matches are being played on the clay at the Boca West Country Club.

Levine reached the final of this playoff last year before losing to Weston's Wayne Odesnik. He is determined to clinch the spot this time around, but realizes it won't be easy against 6-9 Isner, who is ranked 17 spots ahead of Levine at No. 113. The two players are friends off the court and know each other's games well, dating to their college days.

Levine played one season for the University of Florida in the spring of 2007 and snapped Isner's 46-match winning streak at the University of Georgia. They have played three times since turning pro, and Levine leads 2-1. Isner won their last meeting. Both players plan to compete at the French Open regardless of the result of the playoff match, but one will have the advantage of a main draw spot while the other has to go through the qualifying rounds there.

''John's serve is unbelievable,'' Levine said. ``He could have games where he serves four aces, so you have to focus on the things you can control against him. I'm very excited because I've played main draw of the three other Slams, but never made it at the French.''

The other four men who competed for the men's wild card were Evan King, 17, of Chicago; Michael McClune, 19, of Irvine, Calif.; Nathan Pasha, 16, of Atlanta, and Rhyne Williams, 18, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Eleven women are vying for a wild card: Kristie Ahn, 16, of Upper Saddle River, N.J.; Gail Brodsky, 17, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Beatrice Capra, 17, of Ellicott City, Md.; Lauren Embree, 18, of Marco Island; Nicole Gibbs, 16, of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Madison Keys, 14, of Boca Raton; Christine McHale, 16, of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; Asia Muhammad, 18, of Henderson, Nev.; Sloane Stephens, 16, of Fresno, Calif.; Stacey Tan, 17, of Lakewood, Calif., and CoCo Vandeweghe, 17, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Click here to see the 2009 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Calendar.

The 2009 Tour calendar features 54 tournaments (inclusive of the four Grand Slams) across 31 countries and record prize money of over $86 million. The international breadth of tournaments includes 25 events in Europe, 15 events in the Americas and 14 events in the Asia-Pacific region. Seventeen combined events include Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Beijing, Sydney, Moscow, Eastbourne, New Haven, Brisbane, 's-Hertogenbosch, Estoril, Memphis and Acapulco, along with the four Grand Slams. Eight back-to-back men/women events include Dubai, Tokyo, Rome, Cincinnati, Canada, Auckland, Bastad and Warsaw. 2009 will also see new tournaments in Madrid, Brisbane, Monterrey, Ponte Vedra Beach, Bastad, Warsaw and Osaka. Additionally, in 2011, Rome, Cincinnati and Canada will all be combined men/women events.

On Court Coaching
The 2009 Roadmap calendar will also feature on-court coaching at all events, following approval by the Tour Board at its US Open meeting of this fan entertainment innovation. The decision to implement on-court coaching follows extensive testing of the concept and strong support from broadcasters, sponsors and tournaments and majority support from the Tour's Players Council.

Under the new rule, players can request their coach once per set, either on a changeover or at the end of a set. In addition, a player may request her coach if her opponent has requested a medical timeout or change of attire/toilet break. All coaches called on court during televised matches will be required to wear a microphone to capture the coaching conversation for TV viewers.

"I applaud the Tour for taking a bold step to increase access and enhance entertainment for TV viewers," said Jason Bernstein, ESPN's Senior Director for Programming & Acquisitions. "Women's tennis has been a leader in player access initiatives, and on-court coaching will be a great addition for the fan experience."

Diamond Racquet Doesn't Help Asia

Monday, August 25, 2008

Black Tennis Pro's Asia Muhammad
I must say that I am truly sorry not to see American Asia Muhammad progress in singles at the U.S. Open. Earlier today Asia became one of the first round casualties, falling to Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai 2-6, 4-6. It wasn't a total beat down, so I take solace in the fact that she put forth an effort. Asia is playing doubles, perhaps she can make a few inroads there.

I became very fond of watching her play at the end of 2007 and was hoping that she could parlay her upswing into something major this year. Fortunately Asia is very young and has plenty of time to improve her game.

Keep your head up Asia!

It Must Be Nice - Asia Muhammad Debuts At U.S. Open With Diamond Racquet

Black Tennis Pro's Asia Muhammad
Asia Muhammad will be sporting a big of bling at the U.S. Open this year.

Las Vegas tennis sensation Asia Muhammad is making her professional debut this week at the U.S. Open as a wild card. She is a product of Andre Agassi's Las Vegas Academy and has been consistently ranked in the top 10 throughout her junior career.

Black Tennis Pro's Asia MuhammadBut it is a famous Las Vegas jeweler that is making this debut extra special, as he adorned Asia's signature pink racquet with grand Diamond initials before her father took it to New York to present it to his daughter before she plays in the tennis tournament of her life and begin her professional career.

"I've known and watched Asia develop for several years now," said Michael E. Minden, owner of Michael E. Minden Diamond Jewelers in Las Vegas. "We are all so proud that she is representing Vegas and wanted to mark this very special occasion with something that has never been done before; so, as a special gift, we custom fitted her racquet with 1.00ctw of VS quality pave set Diamonds in 2 letter A's above her grip."

"This is the first time I've actually put Diamonds on a piece of athletic equipment," notes Minden. "However, we came up with a special process to affix it to the racquet, with a special technology to transfer the letters to a new racquet, when Asia wears out the first one. The same Diamonds can be added to a golf club, and makes a very exclusive gift for any exceptional athlete in most any sport."

Each letter retails for $1,750 and includes installation. For further information, please contact Michael E. Minden at (702) 595-8900, http://www.TennisDiamonds.com.

US Open Women's Singles Wild Cards Announced

Friday, August 22, 2008

Black Tennis Pro's Jamea Jackson, Ahsha Rolle and Asia Muhammad

USTA Girls’ 18s National Champion Gail Brodksy (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Jamea Jackson (Bradenton, Fla.), Asia Muhammad (Las Vegas), Melanie Oudin (Roswell, Ga.), Ahsha Rolle (Miami Shores, Fla.), CoCo Vandeweghe (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), Frenchwomen Séverine Bremond and an Australian player to be named have been awarded women’s singles main draw wild card entries into the 2008 US Open Tennis Championships, which will be played August 25 – September 7 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Both the men’s and women’s US Open singles champions will earn $1.5 million with the ability to earn an additional $1 million in bonus prize money (for a total $2.5 million potential payout) based on their performance in the Olympus US Open Series. In addition, both US Open singles champions will receive a new 2009 Lexus IS-F automobile.

Five of the eight main draw wild card recipients are age 22 or younger.

Bremond, 29, is currently ranked No. 124 and received her wild card through a reciprocal agreement with the French Tennis Federation, which granted a women’s main draw wild card into the 2008 French Open to a player designated by the USTA. This will mark her 20th consecutive Grand Slam appearance; she was a 2006 Wimbledon quarterfinalist, becoming the first qualifier to advance that far since 1999. In February of 2008, she achieved a career high ranking of 34.

Brodsky, 17, earned her wild card by winning the 2008 USTA Girls’ 18s National Championship last weekend in Berkeley, Calif. After winning the 2007 Girls’ 18s Easter Bowl, Brodsky reached the quarterfinals at the 2007 Junior Wimbledon Championships. She reached the semifinals at the 2007 $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Troy, Ala, and is currently ranked No. 387 after reaching the quarterfinals at the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Vancouver, Canada.

Jackson, 21, finished 2006 ranked inside the top 50 for the first time in her career, but spent much of 2007 recovering from hip surgery. Currently ranked No. 415, she reached the semifinal at the $75,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Dothan, Ala., in April. At age 19 in April, 2006, she became the lowest-ranked player (at No. 75) to represent the United States in Fed Cup and led the U.S. Fed Cup team to a first round 3-2 upset over Germany and posted the biggest upset (by ranking) in U.S. Fed Cup history, defeating world No. 14 Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the process.

Muhammad, 17, is currently ranked No. 416. A week after making her first semifinal appearance in a pro event at the 2007 $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in El Paso, Texas, she won her first pro event at the $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Houston. In March, she reached the final at the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Las Vegas. Muhammad was a doubles semifinalist at last year’s US Junior Open, and later played for the 2007 U.S. Junior Fed Cup team.

Oudin, 16, is currently ranked No. 230 in addition to being No. 3 in the ITF World Junior Rankings. She won her first professional singles title in July at the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Lexington, Ky., and in March, she won her first WTA Tour match, defeating Maret Ani in the first round at Indian Wells. She also reached the final at the $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. In March, Oudin won the USTA Girls’ 18s International Spring Championships and in April she captured the 2008 Girls’ 18s Easter Bowl.

Rolle, 23, is currently ranked No. 133. As a qualifier in 2007, she reached the third round of the US Open and achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 82. This season, Rolle reached the semifinals at the $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Jackson, Miss., and reached the second round at Indian Wells before losing to current World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic. She also represented the U.S. in the semifinals of the 2008 Fed Cup.

Vandeweghe, 16, reached the final of the 2008 USTA Girls’ 18s National Championship last weekend in Berkeley, Calif. She’s currently ranked No. 516 and reached the quarterfinals at the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Las Vegas in March. Vandeweghe reached the semifinals of two USTA Pro Circuit events in 2007, and represented the U.S. on the 2007 Junior Fed Cup team.

In addition to the eight US Open women’s singles main draw wild cards, the USTA also announced the nine women who have been awarded wild card entries into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, which will be held August 19-22 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Players receiving US Open qualifying wild cards are: Kristie Ahn (16, Upper Saddle River, N.J.), Julia Boserup (16, Los Angeles), Madison Brengle (18, Dover, Del.), Kimberly Couts (19, Bradenton, Fla.), reigning US Open girls’ singles champion Kristina Kucova (18, Slovak Republic), Amanda McDowell (20, Atlanta), Christina McHale (16, Englewood Cliffs, N.J.), Shenay Perry (24, Coral Springs, Fla.), and Sloane Stephens (15, Boca Raton, Fla.)
