OFF TOPIC: Georgia Congressman John Lewis Says McCain Campaign "Playing With Fire"

Saturday, October 11, 2008

Black Tennis Pro's John Lewis"They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better."

Congressman John Lewis on McCain-Palin Campaign

Georgia Congressman and Civil Rights Leader John Lewis has obviously had enough of this weeks hate rhetoric being spewed by the McCain-Palin Campaign.

In a statement today Lewis said:

"As one who was a victim of violence and hate during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, I am deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign," Lewis said in a statement. "Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse.

During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama.

As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all. They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better."

McCain and Palin have ramped up their negative remarks to the point that their supporters have felt totally free to shout terms such as McCain and Palin, supporters have shouted "traitor," "terrorist," "treason," "liar" and even "off with his head."

McCain and Palin have created such a comfort zone of hate at their rallies that one woman who was handed the microphone by John McCain said that ""I can't trust Obama. He's an Arab." McCain retrived the microphone and said, "No, ma'am. No, ma'am. He's not, he's a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues."

McCain must really not like Arabs, because after he and "Obama pallin' around with terroists" Palin have called the Senator everything but a child of God this week, even he drew the line at Arab.

"I Was A Very Good Fighter Today," Gael Monfils Into Bank Austria Final

VIENNA, Austria (AP)—Frenchman Gael Monfils and German Philipp Petzschner reached the final of the Bank Austria-Tennis Trophy in Vienna on Saturday.

Eighth-seeded Monfils defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (2) and qualifier Petzschner rallied to stop 2004 champion Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Monfils will play his first final of the season, while Petzschner had never gone beyond the quarterfinals of an ATP event.

“I won’t put myself under any pressure, just get out and play and enjoy the match,” Monfils said.

Monfils won the only previous meeting against Petzschner in straight sets— two weeks ago in Bangkok, Thailand.

“I have something to make up for that, so I am looking forward to the final,” said Petzschner, who is ranked 125th but will enter the top 100 next week.

Monfils, the only seeded player in the semifinals, broke Kohlschreiber at 3-3 and saved four break points against his serve to win the opening set. The second went with serve until 6-5 when Kohlschreiber used the only chance to crack Monfils’ serve and tie the match.

In the deciding set’s third game—the longest of the match—Kohlschreiber fought off six break points but lost when Monfils hit a backhand passing shot.

Monfils missed three match points when he led 6-5 and 40-0, but used a fifth chance to close the match in the tiebreaker.

OFF TOPIC: Obama 2, McCain 0

Black Tennis Pro's Second Presidential DebateAccording to early snap polling at CNN, Fox, and CBS, Senator Barack Obama has succeeded in coming out the favorite in the second presidential debate. Senator Obama spoke very directly to the audience and delivered his responses with respect, precision and clarity as he displayed a firm command of all subject matter.

I thought that it went well for both of the candidates. Unfortunately for McCain though, his style of delivery and blame is just not appealing.

And, the primary incentive for Senator Obama to debate well? Post debate PDA with his very loving wife Michelle of course!

Kremlin Cup Over For Venus

Black Tennis Pro's Venus Williams Kremlin CupAmerican Venus Williams will be leaving Moscow, Russia almost as swiftly as she arrived. The Kremlin Cup will not be hers to celebrate as she was knocked out of contention by Italy's Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta defeated Venus 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

"I totally came here because I love winning. I have never won this title, but I just had a day where I could not control my game. She played well."

Well, at least she seems, as usual, to have a good head about it. Life goes on.

OFF TOPIC: MSNBC's Keith Olbermann's "Special Comment" To Sarah Palin

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Last night MSNBC's Keith Olbermann used the end of his show "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" to play 'all's fair in love and war' with Sarah Palin. Olbermann took the time to respond to Palin's claim that Senator Barack Obama has been "pallin' around with terrorists"

No Porsche For Venus

Monday, October 6, 2008

Black Tennis Pro's Venus Williams Porsche Tennis Grand PrixAmerican Venus Williams had to wave goodbye to the fans at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany, and the beautiful red Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabrio as well. Granted, she can probably afford any car that she wants, but it is a nice prize.

Serbian Jelena Jankovic, who became the World No. 1 today, defeated Venus 6-7(8), 7-5, 2-6.

Venus began the match very well and it appeared that no matter what Jankovic did, she would not be able to overcome Venus' game. But for whatever reason, mid-way through the second set Venus' game began to break down on all fronts. Her serve and forehand in particular really got out of rhythm.

Venus said, "she played well and I made too many errors, but I played some good points, too. It was a good competition."

Venus will compete for the Kremlin Cup this week, sister Serena withdrew with an ankle injury.
