Around The Net... Venus And Serena At The Sony Ericsson Open
Thursday, March 25, 2010
The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour announced the 2009 winners of the annual Player Awards during a special ceremony Wednesday at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Florida. Seven players were honored for their remarkable on and off court achievements during the 2009 season.
Serena Williams was voted the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s 2009 Player of the Year for the third time in her career, having previously earned the accolade for the 2002 and 2008 seasons. Serena had a stellar 2009 season, winning two Grand Slam singles titles (the Australian Open and Wimbledon), the prestigious year-end Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, and reaching the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Additionally, she was a semifinalist at five more Tour events and recorded 14 wins over Top 10 opponents during the season. Williams finished 2009 as the top ranked singles player in the world, marking the fifth time in her career that she ascended to the pinnacle of the rankings.
Serena and Venus Williams won the Doubles Team of the Year award for their collective achievements in 2009, highlighted by winning four titles which included three Grand Slams (the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open) and the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. The pair ended the year with a 24-2 win-loss record.
“2009 was one of the best seasons of my career and winning the Player of the Year award for the third time is a great achievement for me,” said Sony Ericsson WTA Tour World No.1 Serena Williams. “2009 will always be memorable for me not just for my singles accomplishments, but because Venus and I won four titles together and I am thrilled to be sharing the Doubles Team of the Year award with my sister.”
“I love playing doubles with Serena as we have so much fun on the court together,” said Sony Ericsson WTA Tour World No.5 Venus Williams. “At the beginning of the 2009 season Serena and I decided to put a lot of emphasis on doubles and I am thrilled that we were able to achieve so much together.”

Serena's Absence Felt At Paris Open
Thursday, February 11, 2010
On Friday, February 6, American Serena Williams pulled out of the Paris Open because of a leg injury. This injury and her inability to play comes as no surprise to anyone who watched her win her fifth Australian Open last month in spite of having her leg and other places heavily taped.
At the Paris Open on Wednesday, Russian Elena Dementieva spoke about Serena's absence.
"It's very disappointing for the tournament because she is a great player."
"We have had some great matches. I always like to play against her. It is a great experience. But you saw her in Australia with all that taping on her leg and she still produced a great win.
"So it is not surprising that she isn't here -- especially as she is always playing to win a tournament and pushing herself."

(VIDEO) Serena Williams: "What Athlete Really Is At 100% Every Time? Probably Never"
Saturday, January 16, 2010
World No. 1 Serena Williams says she is happy with the condition of her knee ahead of her Australian Open title defense.
Williams suffered from knee soreness during her straight-sets loss to Elena Dementieva in Friday night’s Medibank International final in Sydney.
At Melbourne Park for a press conference this afternoon, Williams said her knee was much better and that the injury had not hampered her preparation for the year’s first Grand Slam.
“If anything, it helped. I played a lot of matches (in Sydney) in a row, you know, back to back. I had a long three‑set match. Eventually, you know, I had a quick turnaround time,” she said.
“But that was good preparation for me because I do plan on playing both singles and doubles here (at Melbourne Park).”
The American said she did not like to use injury as an excuse for her 6-3 6-2 loss in the Sydney final.
“I don't know if that would be very nice,” she said.
“I definitely wasn't at my best. But, you know, I feel like it's very comforting to know that I wasn't at my best in that particular match … I think Elena played well. She always plays me well. I think we always have really fun, tough, tough matches. With that being said, I thought she played amazing.
“What athlete really is at 100 per cent every time? Probably never.”
The top seed will begin her Australian Open campaign on Tuesday against Poland’s Urszula Radwanska, who she defeated at Wimbledon in 2008. Williams described her as a “tough cookie”.
“She's a tough player, and she's definitely no push‑over. She's a younger sister (of 10th seed Agnieszka Radwanska), and younger sisters always want to play really hard and really tough. I know that for a fact,” she said.
“It's definitely not an easy first round.”
Talk inevitably shifted to the return of Belgian star Justine Henin, a player with whom Williams shares a fierce – and occasionally acrimonious - rivalry. However, the American said she was pleased to see Henin competing again.
“What an amazing effort and quality for both her and (fellow Belgian comeback queen) Kim Clijsters. It's so good to see two such good players back,” she said.
Williams will be attempting to win her fifth title at Melbourne Park, having previously lifted the trophy in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Rough Day At The Office In Sydney For Serena

SYDNEY (AP)—Top-seeded Serena Williams struggled in the Sydney International final Friday, committing 40 unforced errors in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia.
Williams also appeared to hurt her left knee during the match but later downplayed any suggestion of an injury. She said she still plans to play singles and doubles with her sister, Venus, at the Australian Open next week.
“I think she played well,” Serena Williams said, “I made about a thousand and two unforced errors … it’s better now than later, I guess.”
When asked about her left leg, which she appeared to favor during the match, she said: “I was struggling a little bit, but, you know, I hate to make any excuse. I think she definitely deserves all the credit for what she did.”
Williams said she felt great heading into the season’s first major, where she is the defending champion.
“I feel like I have more than enough matches under my belt,” she said. “I feel like I’m really ready and fit. Even though I didn’t play great today, I feel like I can play much better.”
Earlier, former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis advanced to the final with a 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (5) victory over Mardy Fish of the U.S. Baghdatis will play Richard Gasquet, who beat French compatriot Julien Benneteau 6-3, 7-5.
The 28-year-old Dementieva became the first woman to defend her Sydney title since Martina Hingis in 2001-2002.

Serena And Elena Post Up For Sydney Final

SYDNEY — World number one Serena Williams called on all her signature fighting spirit to overhaul French opponent Aravane Rezai and reach her first Sydney International final on Thursday.
The American 11-time Grand Slam champion clawed back from a set and 2-5 down to defeat 27th-ranked Rezai 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 and will play defending champion Elena Dementieva in Friday's final.
Fifth seed Dementieva, who downed Williams at this stage in last year's tournament, was too strong for sixth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the other semi, marching to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Williams will be bidding for her 36th title, while Dementieva will be after her 15th. Williams leads 7-4 in their career matches.
For much of the two-hour contest, Williams looked consigned to losing her fourth Sydney semi-final, before she raised her level to claim 11 of the last 15 games.
"I was lucky to get through today, for sure," Williams said.
"I was just trying to play my game and do the best that I could. I didn't do so well.
"I hit I don't know how many errors today, but I finally made a couple of shots."
Faced with a chastening defeat just days ahead of the defence of her Australian Open crown, Williams dug deep and turned the tide against the impressive Rezai.
"I don't think she lost her way at all," Williams said. "I just think at that point I lifted my game.
"I thought she did really well. I felt like I literally lifted my game at that point because I knew I was going be headed to Melbourne (for the Australian Open) if I didn't.
"I kept thinking, 'I want to get a little more practice and I'd hate for it to end now'."
Rezai said she had learnt from the defeat.
"I was probably scared to win the match," she said. "But I realise I have the game and I can win, so I learn one more thing today: It's just to fight until the end of the match."
Dementieva went on from her impressive straight-sets win over world number two Dinara Safina late Wednesday to ease past Azarenka.
"I was trying to be very aggressive from the beginning of the match," Dementieva said.
"I didn't want it to go to three sets because I need to save some energy for the final."
Dementieva said she was looking forward to facing Williams ahead of next week's Australian Open.
"I'm sure it's going to be a tough one. I think playing her in early rounds it's a completely different game," she said.
"So to play her in the final, it's going to be a tough challenge for me.
"It looks like she's in very good shape right now. It's going to be a tough battle."

Serena Dispatches Dushevina In Sydney
Wednesday, January 13, 2010
SYDNEY — Serena Williams stormed into the semi-finals of the Sydney International on Wednesday, cranking up the heat on her opponents ahead of next week's Australian Open.
The American world number one tossed aside Russian Vera Dushevina 6-2, 6-2, making it just seven games she has dropped on her way to the last four of the Sydney tournament.
Williams, strong favourite to lift her fifth Australian Open crown and her 12th Grand Slam, takes on world number 27 Aravane Rezai of France in Thursday's semi-finals.
Rezai won her third match of the tournament against Italian Flavia Pennetta, 6-3, 6-0 on Wednesday.
In the bottom half of the draw, Belarus sixth seed Victoria Azarenka is through to the semi-finals after beating Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 7-5, while defending champion Elena Dementieva was due to face world number two Dinara Safina later Wednesday.
"I definitely enjoy playing in the heat," Williams said of steamy Melbourne, home to the Open. "I usually enjoy playing in the heat. I live in Florida, so it's all about hot weather there.
"So I think maybe that's one of the reasons why I do so well down here.
"The past couple of times I won it's been extremely hot, so I expect the same temperatures again."
Asked during her post-match press conference how close she was to her best form, Williams said: "I always try to get there usually around the semi-finals and finals of the Grand Slams.
"I'm just doing the best that I can now to get there. Hopefully I have a long way to go, which I think is always good."
Williams said she was expecting her toughest match of the week against Rezai.
"I haven't played her, but I know her game," she said. "I played her in doubles and (sister) Venus has played her before.
"She's a good player and she's really young. She has a lot of drive. I think she can be really good. It'll definitely be my toughest match yet."
Azarenka had to again work hard to stay alive in the tournament, taking two hours 20 minutes to extinguish the challenge of the 24th-ranked Cibulkova.
So far Azarenka has been taken to three sets in all her three matches at the tournament.

Round Robin Play Puts Serena Up One, And Venus Down One
Tuesday, October 27, 2009
A picture is worth a thousand words, and the above photo says it all...
On Tuesday evening in Doha at the 2009 Sony Ericsson Championships, American sisters Venus and Serena Williams split the outcome of their round robin play down the middle... Venus lost and Serena won.
First up was Venus against Russian Elena Dementieva. During the first set Venus played beautifully and was in total control, it appeared that the outcome of Venus winning was a foregone conclusion. Wrong.
Somewhere mid second set, after being up a set and a break, Venus took her foot off of the gas, loaded up her game with errors and allowed Dementieva to breeze right on by her to set up a third and final set; the handwriting was already on the wall.
Dementieva came out even stronger in the third set and sealed the deal by defeating Venus 3-6, 7-6(6) 6-2 - very disheartening.
Serena Williams and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova immediately followed that match and played in very different fashion. The two ladies were literally toe-to-toe until the very end. Serena was able to win critical points when necessary and came out the victor defeating Kuznetsova in straight sets 7-6, 6-5.

Very Different Wins Bring The Sisters To The Same Place - An All Williams Wimbledon Final
Thursday, July 2, 2009
What can you say? What is there to be said?
Americans Venus and Serena Williams epitomize the ability to persevere. These ladies are just something else!
Up first today Serena had a literal battle of wills against Russian Elena Dementieva. Of course if you're going will power to will power against Serena, you're pretty much going to lose. Nonetheless, Dementieva came to play. Dementieva served like I have never seen her serve before. We all know that she has one hell of a fierce ground game, and that alone has given Serena headaches previously, but to add a good service game to that presents a different equation.
In a toe-to-toe battle in which Serena had to save a match point, the ladies put on a war of a ground game that could not have been scripted... with Dementieva actually having the upper hand for a large part of the three-set match.
Yet it had to end, and after 2 hours and 48 minutes Serena finally edged Dementieva out 64-77, 7-5, 8-6.
At the end Serena said, “Elena played so well. We gave the crowd a wonderful match.”
“The more we play, the better it gets. When we play our match on Saturday, you know, it’s for everything. This is what we dreamed of when we were growing up in Compton 20-something years ago. So, you know, this is what we worked for, and this is what we want. Like I wanted her to win today, and she wanted me to win today. It’s all come down to this.”
And Then Came Venus
Not so much drama between Venus and Russian Dinara Safina... more like pure ugliness. Venus put her foot on the gas and did not stop until she reached the finish line. The match looked like Venus was on automatic pilot.
In 51 minutes Venus just demolished Safina 6-1, 6-0.
Afterwards Venus said, “I was out there and really able to stay focused; I have so much experience on this court.”
To say the least...

Serena Williams Withdraws From Family Circle Cup
Saturday, April 11, 2009
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Defending champion Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Family Circle Cup because of an injury to her left leg.
The world's No. 1 player announced in a statement Tuesday that she still plans to attend some tournament events.
Williams said she originally hurt her leg at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, where she lost to Victoria Azarenka earlier this month.
Azarenka withdrew from the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday because of an injured right shoulder.
Williams' sister Venus and No. 3-ranked Elena Dementieva are among those slated to play in the tournament.
Qualifying play begins Saturday.

Dualing Sisters: The Williams Sisters Semi That Dubai Was Waiting For
Thursday, February 19, 2009
At the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships both American super sisters Venus and Serena Williams will be slugging it out in the semifinals... against one another.
To set up this semifinal match the sisters first had to get by very able quarterfinal opponents. Serena took out Serbian Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-4, and Venus knocked out defending champion Russian Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-3.
Of Ivanovic, Serena said, "she was really trying to hit hard. I think her goal was to go for broke. I was feeling a bit tired at the start of the second set, but wasn't too worried about her going 3-0 up as I knew I was just a break down. I knew I could pull it off."
On Dementieva's game Venus said, "she has been playing great this year and she is a great player. She likes to control the match, and I also like doing the same. So, I am pleased that I was able to do that."
With regard to the two of them meeting, Serena said "we are both the best players on the tour right now. Obviously, we both are also playing our best tennis right now, which definitely makes our matches more exciting."
I'm rollin' with Venus for the smackdown!!

The Australian Open Women's Final Is Set
Thursday, January 29, 2009
The Australian Open women's final will consist of American Serena Williams and Russian Dinara Safina. Both ladies looked really good in their semifinals on Wednesday. Serena defeated another Russian, Elena Dementieva, whom she has been having all sorts of trouble with lately,
6-3, 6-4. Dinara had a bit more trouble defeating fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva, but it still resulted in a win for her coming in at 6-3, 7(7)-6(4).
I'm looking forward to this match, I really like both of these ladies. It's been nice seeing Dinara turn her game around and come into her own over this past year and more. Serena of course is the tried and true who's going to fight to the bitter end. We've seen a bit of that grit in Dinara too throughout this Open.
While my money is on Serena, Dinara is capable of putting up a formidable fight. Let the games begin.
Oh, and there needs to be some Clint Eastwood "High Plains Drifter" music playing when these two come out.

Did Chris Fowler Say What I Think He Said?
Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Tonight, after Serena Williams defeated Elena Dementieva in their semifinal at the Australian Open, Chris Fowler and Bud Collins were "commentating" about the match. They drifted into the area of Dementieva's serve falling by the wayside yet again. Now, I must admit, I was reading when I heard this, but I do believe I heard Chris Fowler say:
"Service yips are like herpes, they come back at the worst possible time."
Did I not just post an article regarding ridiculous commentary? Perhaps I should mail it to him. Surely there was some other analogy.Oh good grief!

Serena Runs Out Of Steam In Sydney Semifinal
Thursday, January 15, 2009
"I gave it away more than anything. I made a lot of errors and made her look like a champ, really. I just pretty much gave her the match," said Serena. "It was good to have a few matches under my belt getting ready for Melbourne." I feel like I'm going play a lot better than what I did this week. My main goal, obviously, is to go to Melbourne and do the best that I can do."
American Serena Williams couldn't seem to keep up the powerful momentum she had been building in the Australian Open Series Medibank International. After her elongated quarterfinal match against Caroline Wozniacki, there just wasn't much left in the tank
World no. 12 Russian Elena Dementieva was up to the challenge and engaged Serena in a number of power rallies that at least made some of the match worthy of watching. Dementieva defeated Serena 6-3, 6-1. Ouuuuuch.

Venus And Serena Determined In Doha
Wednesday, November 5, 2008
DOHA, Qatar (AP)—Venus and Serena Williams won contrasting round-robin matches at the Sony Ericsson Championships on Wednesday and next face a familiar opponent: each other.
Venus endured a struggle against Elena Dementieva 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to win her second match, and Serena romped past Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-1 in her first at the season-ending WTA Tour championships.
On Thursday, they meet for the 18th time in their professional careers, with Serena holding a 9-8 edge.
“Tomorrow I’ll definitely be going for the win, and just taking everything that I can,” said seventh-seeded Venus, who would qualify for the semifinals with a win.
“It’s going to be good and exciting,” third-seeded Serena said. “She’s pretty much already in the semis. And I’ve got to get there or I want to get there. So I know it’s not going to be easy.”
Serena barely got the better of her older sister in their last contest, the U.S. Open quarterfinals, and went on to win her ninth major. She lost to Venus in the Wimbledon final, and the pair teamed up for Olympic gold in the doubles at Beijing.
Venus rallied from 2-0 down in the last set against Dementieva. She had 10 double-faults to five for the Russian, but converted eight of 10 break points as the two engaged in powerful baseline rallies.
“It was just really competitive out there,” the older Williams said.
The points were much shorter between Serena Williams and second-seeded Safina, whose second loss eliminated her from semifinals contention.
