US OPEN SERIES ROGERS CUP: Venus Williams Withdraws Due To Viral Illness
Monday, August 8, 2011
Venus Williams at 1st Annual Hall Of Game Awards Hosted By The Cartoon Network in February 2011.
TORONTO — Venus Williams withdrew from the WTA Tour's Rogers Cup starting on Monday because of illness, according to organizers.
Williams said she wasn't feeling well and consulted a doctor on Sunday.
She was diagnosed with a viral illness and said she was "extremely disappointed" she won't be able to play in Toronto.
Qualifier Zhang Shuai of China steps into Williams' first-round match Tuesday against former world number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.
Lourdes Dominguez Lino got the extra berth in the draw.
The strong Rogers Cup field still includes Williams' sister, Serena, and world number one Caroline Wozniacki, No. 2 Kim Clijsters and No. 5 Maria Sharapova.
Serena Williams, who missed 11 months with a string of health problems, returned in June and won the WTA title in Stanford in late July.
Venus Williams, ranked 34th in the world, has had a disappointing season hampered by hip and abdominal injuries.
"I was really excited to play Toronto," Venus Williams said in a statement. "I came here ready to go and was practicing. I wasn't feeling very well and had to see the doctor today.
"I was diagnosed with a viral illness and unfortunately am unable to play. I am extremely disappointed. I'm very sorry to the fans and tournament."
The talent-laden Toronto tournament is a tuneup for the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open that starts on August 29 in New York.

WIMBLEDON DAY 7: There's A First Time For Everything - Venus And Serena Williams Eliminated Same Day, Same Round - OUCH!!!!
Monday, June 27, 2011
(L-R) American super sisters Serena and Venus Williams walking off the courts of Wimbledon as they both lose their matches.
Wimbledon (AP) - "Definitely not our best day," Venus said. "I think we both envisioned seeing this day going a little bit different."
Also knocked out was top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, who fell 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 to No. 24 Dominika Cibulkova in the Dane's latest failed attempt to win her first Grand Slam title.
Venus and Serena have won nine of the last 11 titles at Wimbledon, and have faced each other in four finals.
In 2006, Venus lost in the third round and Serena missed the tournament. This is the first year that, when both sisters were in the draw, both lost before the quarterfinals.
The last time the sisters lost on the same day at a Grand Slam was in 2008, when they fell in the third round at the French Open.
"Obviously it's not something planned," Venus said. "We rarely lose on the same day."
With 2004 champion Maria Sharapova of Russia among those advancing Monday, it marks the first time since 1913 that all eight women's Wimbledon quarterfinalists are from Europe — all from different countries.
After winning last year's Wimbledon, Serena missed nearly a year after foot surgery and subsequent blood clots in her lungs. She returned two weeks ago at Eastbourne for the first time since then. Venus also returned at Eastbourne after a five-month layoff with a hip injury
Venus was clearly off the top of her game Monday, committing 16 unforced errors and converting only one of four break points. She was broken four times.
"I didn't seem to get the ball in," Venus said. "She took her opportunities. I just didn't put the ball in the court, simple as that. Unfortunately, I seem not to have my good days against her. But she played well."
The 33rd-seeded Pironkova, who lost in the semifinals here last year to eventual runner-up Vera Zvonareva, played steady tennis against Venus and never cracked.
"I beat her two times, two consecutive years — it feels amazing to play such a champion on this legendary court," the Bulgarian said after holding serve and stroking a backhand winner down the line on her second match point. "When I come here I just feel so relaxed. I really like the atmosphere here."
Serena saved four match points before the ninth-seeded Bartoli closed out the contest by hitting a service winner into the corner. It was Serena's earliest exit at Wimbledon since a third-round loss in 2005.
"I never came here thinking I would lose," she said. "That's my attitude. You win some and you lose some. Today just happened to be the one that slipped under me."
But Serena said she was satisfied getting as far as she did after such a long time away from the game.
"I think I did really well just being able to come back and play and win some matches, and just really play tough," she said. "Even today I lost, but I was able to kind of hang in there and play tough. And I can only get better. That can potentially be really scary, because I can only go up from here and I can just do so much more."
Bartoli made the Wimbledon final in 2007, losing to Venus.
Serena had 20 unforced errors Monday to go with 29 winners, and managed to convert only one of five break points. Bartoli served 10 aces, two more than Williams, and kept down her errors to 17.
It was the first time Bartoli has beaten the American after straight-set defeats in their previous two matches.
"Beating Serena is almost like a dream come true," Bartoli said. "Even though she didn't play for almost one year, she's probably one of the greatest champions in women's tennis.
"For me to be able come back after having three match points and losing this game at 6-5, and still be able to bounce back, it's really huge."

(VIDEO PRESS CONFERENCE) Venus Talks About Being Back And Moving Forward
Sunday, June 12, 2011
EASTBOURNE, England - The last time Venus Williams played on the WTA it was in January at the Aussie Open, where she had to retire after one game of her third round match due to a hip injury - since then she has been out with that hip injury as well as an abdominal injury. She returns this week at Eastbourne and met the press on the weekend - here's a taste of what she said...
On her injury lay-off finally coming to an end...
"I'm very excited - I can't believe I've finally made it. This time I listened to the doctor's advice and accepted limits... it's hard as an athlete to accept limits, but it was all about that. I never could have foreseen the amount of time I had to take off and there were frustrating moments, but I never let it get me down."
On how she spent the last four and a half months...
"After I got injured in January I made the best use of my time when I was off. I entered school, took some classes and worked on my businesses. I also went to the gym and tried to do my rehab. Initially my goal was to play in Miami but that wasn't even close... It took me a good two and a half months to build up to get here now. Sometimes I wouldn't improve for three weeks, sometimes I'd improve in a week - I feel pretty fit now. I've never given myself a 10 out of 10, but I'm back as soon as I could be. I've taken extra weeks to be really sure."
On missing tennis...
"I've missed tennis. It has been so kind to me. I love my sport and I love my job. I really appreciate being here; it's an honor for me to be here."
On playing in Eastbourne for the first time in 13 years...
"I haven't played here in forever. I can't tell you how excited I am to be here and playing any first round match."
On she and Serena coming back at the same tournament...
"Serena hasn't played in a year and I've only played three or four tournaments in the last 12 months. It's crucial for us to play these matches at this point. We normally take this period to go home, rest and train, but for us right now the best preparation is to be here. We're going to do our best to take home two titles on this road - that's what we aim for every time we hit the court."
On the current No.1 player in the world, Caroline Wozniacki...
"Caroline is a great player doing positive things - she's really on the right road. She doesn't need much advice. Off the court she's a very nice person and super helpful; on the court she's an unbelievable competitor. She has played more consistently than anyone and is leaps and bounds ahead in the points."
On her goal this week...
"Whoever is across the net is my focus at that point. You can't predict who is going to do what... My sole concern is to make sure I'm in the next round."

Sloane Stephens Makes Second Round Exit In Indian Wells
Sunday, March 13, 2011
A very determined 17-year-old-wild-card Sloane Stephens waged a good battle during second round play at the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, but was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by WTA World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
Stephens was able to break Wozniacki's serve twice, but was not able to prevent her own serve from being broken five times, thus enabling Wozniacki to quickly move out front and take the match.
Post match Wozniacki said, “I felt like the timing was not quite there yet, but I think Sloane, she took her chances - she played well. She's a newcomer, and I definitely see a lot of potential in her. But I would like, of course, just to go match by match try to develop my game.”

Sloane Stephens Earns Date With Wozniacki
Thursday, March 10, 2011
Wild card Sloane Stephens defeated qualifier Jamie Hampton 6-2, 6-4 in an-American match Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open to set up a second-round clash with WTA No. 1 and returning finalist Caroline Wozniacki.
The 17-year-old Stephens achieved her career-best win on her tour-level debut here last year, when she came through the qualifying rounds and defeated a 67th-ranked Lucie Hradecka before falling to No. 12 Vera Zvonareva. This will her first win against a player ranked in the Top 10 of the WTA Rankings.
Hampton, the lone American among the 12 qualifiers, was looking for her first win in her sixth tour-level main draw appearance.

Dubai Defending Champ Venus Williams Opens With A Win
Tuesday, February 16, 2010
DUBAI — Venus Williams' bid to hang on to one of her two remaining titles made a reassuring start as she quashed the challenge of one of the tour's brightest young hopes to reach the last 16 of the Dubai Open.
The defending champion's 6-2, 6-3 win over Sabine Lisicki, the 20-year-old Wimbledon quarter-finalist, contained consistent serving, well-timed increases in pressure, and a conspicuously tight focus.
A good week here is important for the five-time Wimbledon champion's belief that, approaching her 30th birthday, she remains capable of winning more majors, and that need showed in the quality of her performance.
There was only one brief moment when it seemed that the hard-hitting but variable German might find sufficient control to get into the match - when she played a brilliant game to break Williams' serve for the only time, and edge up to 3-4 in the second set.
Williams responded immediately, applying extra pressure on her returns to break Lisicki's delivery a fourth time, then smartly closing out the match for the loss of only a point.
She had been put through her paces robustly by her father Richard, before the match, and it appeared to have helped.
"I still try to listen to him," she said, smiling, "and not to rebel against what he says."
The champion's sharp start earned her a meeting with Belarus' Olga Govertsova, a surprise survivor who is coached by her brother, and who brought down the 14th seeded Italian, Francesca Schiavone, in straight sets.
If Williams gets past that as she should, she could go on to a semi-final with the top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki.

Venus Prevails In Hong Kong
Thursday, January 7, 2010
HONG KONG — American champion Venus Williams beat teenaged Danish sensation Caroline Wozniacki in a Hong Kong exhibition match Thursday which was shortened to one set because of rain.
Williams, 29, got off to a slow start, trailing the 19-year-old Wozniacki 3-1 before a series of aces and blistering groundstrokes helped her pull ahead, winning the set 6-4.
Williams, a seven time Grand Slam winner, said she was happy with her performance against the Dane, who is ranked fourth in the world.
"I felt pretty good playing against such a competitive player," Williams told reporters.
"She plays so well."
The American struggled for much of 2009, losing her Wimbledon crown to sister Serena and then crashing out of the Beijing Open in October.
Earlier Thursday, Belarussian Victoria Azarenka, 20, beat Argentine Gisela Dulko, 24, by a 6-1 margin.
The Hong Kong tournament features four teams with three players each -- representing Russia, Europe, the Americas and Asia Pacific -- in singles and mixed doubles play. The tournament wraps up Saturday.
On Wednesday, former world number one Russian Maria Sharapova pulled off a comeback win against China's Zheng Jie 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, while Russia's Vera Zvonareva easily overpowered Japanese newcomer Ayumi Morita, beating her 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour.

The Sisters Are Headed The Same Way - Final In Doha
Saturday, October 31, 2009
As unlikely as it seemed in the beginning, American sisters Venus and Serena Williams will appear in yet another final, this one being that of the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships.
As defending champion, older sister Venus had a hard time sinking her teeth into this tournament and it was the actual performance of others in the Maroon Group, Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva, that allowed Venus to ascend to the semifinals.
Against Serbian Jelena Jankovic in Saturday's final, Venus came out strong but was not able to hold on to the first set. More consistent play and some impressive serving propelled Venus to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win.
Serena has literally sailed through the tournament undefeated and had no problem making her way to the final. The semifinal against Caroline Wozniacki even provided a little more breathing time as the high-spirited Dane retired at 6-4, 0-1.
For big fans of the sisters, such as myself, the title will remain in the family for at least another year.

Serena Williams Wins WTA Player Of The Year Award
Thursday, March 26, 2009
MIAMI (Reuters) - World number one Serena Williams has won her second WTA Player of the Year award, the tour announced on Thursday at a ceremony.
Williams, who did not attend the event, won the U.S. Open last year and reached the Wimbledon final. She also claimed a gold medal with sister Venus in the doubles at the Beijing Olympics.
In her career, the American has claimed ten grand slam titles and she was also the WTA Player of the Year in 2002.
"Winning the Player of the Year award for the second time in my career is a great personal achievement," Williams said in a statement released by the WTA.
Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Liezel Huber of South Africa won the doubles Team of the Year award.
Russia's Dinara Safina was Most Improved Player of the Year after finishing the season ranked second while China's Zheng Jie was awarded Comeback Player of the Year, after returning from injury to climb over 100 places in the rankings.
Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki was Newcomer of the Year after picking up three wins on tour while Serbian Ana Ivanovic was named Humanitarian of the Year for her work with the United Nations Children's Fund.

Rolle Out!
Monday, August 25, 2008
Awwww man!
American Ahsha Rolle was defeated in round one of the U.S. Open by Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark to the tune of 2-6, 1-6. Sheeeesh.
The match was not televised, but the stats say it all. Ahsha had seven double faults and 36 unforced errors in an hour match. She had one attempt at a break point but could not convert.
I'm actually glad that I didn't see this match, it was obviously very ugly. Now we know that this young woman has the goods, why can't she turn them into something useful on the court?
I'll keep watching, supporting and hoping that at some point she will be able to deliver on those skills.
