Venus Williams Not Quite Ready For 2012 - Withdraws From Australian Open

Monday, January 9, 2012

As per her official website, American Venus Williams made this statement:

"I regret to announce that I am withdrawing from the 2012 Australian Open. After several months of training and treatment, I am making steady progress to top competitive form. My diet and fitness regimen have allowed me to make great strides in terms of my health and I am very close to being ready to return to WTA competition. I have every intention to return to the circuit in February."

In August of 2011 Venus disclosed that she had been diagnosed with Sjögren’s Syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disease in which people’s white blood cells attack their moisture-producing glands causing low energy levels and joint pain among other symptoms.

Sounds like she's controlling the disease and not letting it control her - true champion style.

Venus Williams Discloses Recent Diagnosis of Sjögren’s Syndrome

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

After the very sudden and unexpected announcement of her withdrawal from the 2011 U.S. Open, American Venus Williams has disclosed in a statement that she was recently diagnosed with Sjögren’s Syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disease in which people’s white blood cells attack their moisture-producing glands causing low energy levels and joint pain among other symptoms.

According to the Sjögren’s Syndrome Foundation website, although the hallmark symptoms are dry eyes and dry mouth, Sjögren’s may also cause dysfunction of other organs such as the kidneys, gastrointestinal system, blood vessels, lungs, liver, pancreas, and the central nervous system. Patients may also experience extreme fatigue and joint pain and have a higher risk of developing lymphoma.

With upwards of 4,000,000 Americans suffering from Sjögren’s syndrome, it is one of the most prevalent autoimmune disorders. Nine out of 10 patients are women.

In her statement Venus said, “I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw from this year’s US Open.  I have been recently diagnosed with Sjögren's Syndrome, an autoimmune disease which is an ongoing medical condition that affects my energy level and causes fatigue and joint pain. I enjoyed playing my first match here and wish I could continue but right now I am unable to.  I am thankful I finally have a diagnosis and am now focused on getting better and returning to the court soon."

God's speed Venus.

US OPEN SERIES ROGERS CUP: Venus Williams Withdraws Due To Viral Illness

Monday, August 8, 2011

Venus Williams at 1st Annual Hall Of Game Awards Hosted By The Cartoon Network in February 2011.

TORONTO — Venus Williams withdrew from the WTA Tour's Rogers Cup starting on Monday because of illness, according to organizers.

Williams said she wasn't feeling well and consulted a doctor on Sunday.

She was diagnosed with a viral illness and said she was "extremely disappointed" she won't be able to play in Toronto.

Qualifier Zhang Shuai of China steps into Williams' first-round match Tuesday against former world number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.

Lourdes Dominguez Lino got the extra berth in the draw.

The strong Rogers Cup field still includes Williams' sister, Serena, and world number one Caroline Wozniacki, No. 2 Kim Clijsters and No. 5 Maria Sharapova.

Serena Williams, who missed 11 months with a string of health problems, returned in June and won the WTA title in Stanford in late July.

Venus Williams, ranked 34th in the world, has had a disappointing season hampered by hip and abdominal injuries.

"I was really excited to play Toronto," Venus Williams said in a statement. "I came here ready to go and was practicing. I wasn't feeling very well and had to see the doctor today.

"I was diagnosed with a viral illness and unfortunately am unable to play. I am extremely disappointed. I'm very sorry to the fans and tournament."

The talent-laden Toronto tournament is a tuneup for the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open that starts on August 29 in New York.

Blake Withdraws From French Open With Lingering Knee Injury

Monday, May 24, 2010

American James Blake has been sidelined for several recent tournaments, and will remain so for the French Open.

According to a statement on Blake's website dated April 23, 2010:

"James's knee is doing better every day, but unfortunately he still doesn't have a firm timetable for a return to the courts. Presumably he will be back for the grass court season, so he's announced his schedule for June, and that consists of Halle, Eastbourne and Wimbledon."

In a recent statement to the Associated Press Blake said, "I have been required to take a break from competition to treat pain that I have been experiencing in my right knee. "The good news is that I will not need surgery. However, the treatment will require me to take a six-to-eight-week break. I look forward to a successful rehabilitation period and returning to competition in the near future."

Hope to see him back in action soon.

Venus Reverses Role; Serena Retires From Championships

Thursday, November 8, 2007

The Good News:

It may have been short lived, but for a day, Venus Williams was the official coach of record for baby sis' Serena Williams at the Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid. It could not get much better than having a six-time grand slam winner, former world no. 1 and big sis' for your coach - it must be nice!

The Bad News:

Serena has reinjured her previously operated on left knee in her first round robin event. She came out with both knees taped, unfortunately to no avail. She was slow from the first serve. She never looked polished or able to find any kind of rhythm. By the end of the first set she appeared as if she were nearly in tears.

Serena had already taken a medical timeout to treat her left knee at 5-4 down, then after a lengthy discussion with the trainer and retiring from the match, she decided she was not fit to continue and later on announced her withdrawal from the tournament altogether.

"I felt it [the left-knee injury] maybe a little bit yesterday," Williams said. "Although it wasn't too intense so it's really sad it reacted so badly today. I had a really short practice yesterday and the day before I had a short practice because I was just trying to stay fresh for my matches and I'm disappointed I couldn't stay longer in the tournament."

Venus Williams Withdraws From WTA Year-End Championships At The Advice Of Her Doctor

Sunday, October 28, 2007

Venus Williams, originally in seventh place in the Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships points standings, has been forced to withdraw. Following the incident of dizziness that she suffered at the US Open earlier this year, Venus underwent a series of tests, along with follow-up tests after returning from tournaments that she played in Asia in the fall, with her doctors' advice at this time to finalize the testing process and take a break from competitive play.

"This year has been a great one for many reasons," said the Wimbledon winner. "I am pleased that I finished the year in the top eight and in recent weeks I have remained optimistic about participating in the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships. Nevertheless, the accumulation of matches has taken its toll and I have received several medical opinions to delay my return to competitive tennis. As a result, I will miss the Sony Ericsson Championships. I look forward to playing in the New Year for what will hopefully be an even better 2008."

"This year's Sony Ericsson Championships will feature one of the very best fields in the tournament’s history, with so many compelling champions and rising stars," said Larry Scott, Chairman & CEO of the Tour.

Why Do Venus and Serena get Blamed for the State of the WTA?

Monday, August 20, 2007

Articles and headlines like those that I read today are part of the impetus for my starting this blog. It absolutely infuriates me that 99% of the WTA is comprised of non-Black players, yet that less than 1%, namely Venus and Serena catch hell every time the WTA is suffering from poor television ratings, tournament withdrawals or injuries. "Dangerous When Interested" and "Serena has our Attention, but Does Tennis Have Hers"? The assumptions and backhanded allegations being thrown piss me to no end. It never stops. As long as Venus and Serena show up, invigorate the crowd, haul in those television ratings and kick ass on Sunday, it's all good, no matter what the other players are doing. But the second that they don't, the state of the WTA is in jeopardy and the the names Venus and Serena negatively fall from sportscasters lips 24/7, no matter what their reasoning.

When Maria Sharapova, women's tennis "great white hope" recently withdrew from last weeks East West Bank Classic 20 minutes before her semi-final match with Nadia Petrova, all you heard at the time and ever since is "concern" for her health. NOBODY questioned or questions the legitimacy of her injury or how long she'll be out (nevermind that she's been out for a substantial period just recently with "injuries"). The only concern is how soon she will be well again. But the second that Serena or Venus withdraw from an event, every word that they utter is questioned. Today, during the Roger's cup final you could hear all type of inuendo from Ted Robinson and Mary Jo Fernandez regarding Serena's withdrawal from the Pilot Pen Tournament because of her lingering thumb injury.

When Maria Sharapova defeated Serena Williams and won her one and only Wimbledon title in 2004, you could hear the glee in all of the tennis voices that be, "a star is born". They thought for sure that tournaments and ratings would no longer be so dependent upon the presence of the Williams sisters. Much to their chagrin it hasn't worked out that way. Neither has the dominance that they believed/hoped Maria Sharapova would have over tennis.

I've read that John McEnroe has stated that withdrawals in the WTA are "epidemic".

Did you know that world No. 7 Amelie Mauresmo has pulled out of the Pilot Pen Tournament also? You certainly don't know this because of the multitude of headlines questioning her dedication to tennis day after day. That's because they don't exist. Ms. Mauresmo gave her reasoning, withdrew, and that's the end of that.

I constantly have to wonder, is this a sport within which it's difficult to be a Williams sister? Or a Black sista?

Abdominal Strain Forces James Blake to Withdraw from Rogers Cup

Wednesday, August 8, 2007

I was sooo looking forward to seeing James Blake wipe the court with Lleyton Hewitt's butt, but alas, his health is far more important than my desire to see Hewitt beaten again.

With the US Open less than three weeks away, Blake did not want to risk aggravating his injury, allowing Hewitt a free ride into the third round. "It's still painful and it felt even worse this morning than it did last night,'' said Blake, who was set to back up less than 24 hours after his opening round win over Jurgen Melzer. "The adrenaline of playing the match (yesterday) kind of numbed it a little. "Now I notice it a lot more. If I were to go out there and try, I know I'd cause more harm. I can't afford to do that. "I hope (with) four, five days of rest, ice, ultrasound, all the other treatments ... it will be okay for (next week's) Cincinnati (Masters). "I need to be careful with the US Open coming up. I don't want to do something that's going to cause some serious damage.''

Fatigued Venus Williams Withdraws From Rogers Cup

While no immediate reason was given for the withdrawal, I think that it's safe to assume that Venus' withdrawal from next week's Roger's Cup is because she's very simply wiped out. Since her incredible 4th win at Wimbledon in July, Venus has been playing non-stop. Go home, put your feet up and eat some ice cream girl, you've more than earned it. It's time for some "me" time.
